Expert 2000 Jeep Cherokee review

our expert's take
Our expert's take
By Cars.com editors
Full article
our expert's take

Vehicle Overview
The vehicle that most in the auto industry credit with starting the stampede to SUVs gains a handful of styling tweaks for the top-of-the line model. The design for the Cherokee dates to 1984, when it was downsized and introduced as the first modern compact sport utility. Cherokee received a major update in 1997, but the basic design remained intact.

Production of the current Cherokee was scheduled to end in November 2000 to make way for a new 2001 model, but strong sales in 1999 earned the current model a new lease on life. Jeep will continue building the current Cherokee for the 2001 model year, and it will be sold alongside the new model for an unspecified period.

Interior
Cherokee holds five people, though the rear seat is cramped compared to some rivals’ and the narrow rear doors can be tight for adults to negotiate. The spare tire is mounted upright in the cargo area, eating up some luggage space. An outside tire carrier is available from Jeep dealers, but then there is the theft potential.

Exterior
Cherokee comes in two- and four-door styling, with the latter far more popular. The top-line Limited model gets chrome grille and headlamp accents, new side trim and bright silver 16-inch wheels.

Under the Hood
An inline 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 125 horsepower remains the base engine, and an inline 4.0-liter six-cylinder with 190 horsepower is optional. Cherokee comes with 2WD, part-time 4WD (slippery surfaces only) or full-time 4WD (can be used on smooth, dry pavement).

I had this dealership work with me over the phone , my salesman was very kind and helpful .I live in Florida so he sent me video's of the 2000 Jeep Cherokee Sport I wanted he let me listen to engine running and even drove it on video for me I ended up purchasing the vehicle, they did everything , set up shipping for me , it arrived Christmas morning and looked just as good as it did in the video's , was best present I could get, these XJ Cherokee's are hard to find and Autoland sold me a beauty I highly recommend commend this dealership and am thinking of buying a classic muscle car once I sell a couple of my other vehicles and I will give Autoland first crack at finding one for me .I proudly keep their license plate frame on my car to let others know where to find beautiful vehicles like the one I purchased. So if you want a newer vehicle or a classic like the one I purchased I highly recommend Autoland , they sell quality vehicles at quality prices and they do it in a very helpful courteous way .

  • Purchase new in 1999, still drives like new

Purchased new in 1999. Have taken it up many four wheel drive roads in the Colorado mountains. Nearly 200,000 miles. Still completely stock. Very reliable. The 4.0 liter in line 6 engine seems bulletproof, as does the automatic transmission. I have changed the oil every 3000 miles and take it to an authorized Jeep service center for every 60,000 mile recommend service. It was repainted once. AC compressor replaced. One window motor (or something) replaced. Front bearings replaced. It has been a fantastic car. It still drives very well and the engine seems very strong.

  • Sport: Safe and Simple Transportation -Like a Rock

20 yr. owner. A very reliable tank. 75K miles. AC, headliner, door lock issues. Everything else works. Superior driver visibility. A testament to American engineering and quality. Original pearl forest green paint has held up well. No off-road or towing but an option. A great winter vehicle. Unbelievable torque. An automotive Icon for good reason.

  • Best Jeep Ever Owned BY FAR!!

I bought a new 2000 Jeep Cherokee Limited in metallic med gray with chrome grill, leather seats and kick-xxx sound system and the off-road transmission with 9 gears and 2 gear shifts. Was my first SUV which I wanted living in an intense big city because I could sit up high and see stuff way ahead of me. That vehicle was the best I've ever owned because of the incredible maneuverability and power (4.0 liter) that I felt I could climb a wall! It cruised comfortably with the leather seats. Then I had back problems and it was too truck-like for me but today I could have handled the hard braking. So I sold it after only 3 years and never stopped regretting it. They don't make these wonderful short, beamy classic Jeep Cherokees anymore that came out of WWII. I think 2001 or 02 were their last years. I sold it at 76K miles. That young man bought a jewel!

  • Bulletproof Jeep

This is the 7th XJ Cherokee Ive owned since 2002. Only sold/bought so many because I was bouncing back and forth between Europe and the US so it didn't make sense to ship. Has its quirks but a pretty solid SUV for offroad, icy conditions, etc. With all of the offroaders snatching them up and not a lot of clean ones still around the prices are reflecting the limited supply.

  • These Cherokees (XJs) are fantastic SUVs!!

I owned a 2000 Cherokee Sport from 2010 to 2019. Paid $4000 for it, with a Fisher plow already attached. Had around 135,000 miles when I got it. Used it as third vehicle; for plowing; for hauling small trailers; for light off-road fun. Both daughters learned to drive on it and both loved it as much as I did. Drive train was reliable right up until I had to sell it due to rust. Not particularly comfortable for longer rides, but light and nimble off road. Unstoppable in snow and sand. Towed several stuck vehicles off beach. Not great on gas (18ish on highway, 15 in town), but inexpensive and easy to repair. Lots of minor issues (known as Jeep Cherokee features): power window motors and switches that needed replacement, sagging headliner, bad multi-function switch (twice!), bad speaker wires, A/C woes, wiper motor, radiator, water pump, exhaust, brakelines, cps. Nothing too severe, never was stranded. Did I mention it was generally pretty easy to work on? Stock headlights are weak, but replacements are readily available and soooo much better. Really, just a rugged, reliable inexpensive vehicle that had some real off-road and work capabilities. Loved it. Sold it for $1000 with severe unibody rust in rear, but otherwise the body and drive train, especially, were still great at 197,000 miles.

  • I will never own any other vehicle.

I had a 1997 jeep Cherokee and it was totaled when a pickup turned left in front of me. The police said that these jeeps is what saved my life. I bought another 2000 jeep Cherokee 4 X 4 and when it wears out II will buy another like it. The in line 6 is the best engine ever built. I towed a 35 ft motorhome 15 miles up and down hills and it never overheated. Stick with the classic design forever. True Jeep legend. I love it.

  • Lngest lasting, durable vechicle!

Ive had mine for 1 year, ive put on 8,000 miles and it runs amazing. Ive played around with it quite a bit, and it does great in rough terrain. Only time i ever got it stuck was due to it high centering, but with a small lift it would be great. I only get 12mpg in town, and 15mpg an the highway. The entior i very much like due to its "simplicity" not the fanciest interior, but very easy to work on and manage. I find it to be very comfortable with lots of room for hauling things. and has very good vision due to large windows all the way around. I would never get rid of it. I believe it will always do me good. P. S. the jeep/crislyer I-6 best engine!
