Vehicle Overview

The heavy-duty Ram 2500 and 3500 are available in three cab styles: regular cab, crew cab and mega cab. Buyers can choose single or dual rear wheels and a 6-foot-4-inch or 8-foot cargo box. The Hemi-powered Power Wagon is a rugged off-road version of the Ram HD. Heavy-duty versions of the Ram can seat up to six people in certain configurations, and competitors include the Chevrolet Silverado and Ford F-Series Super Duty.

New for 2012
Ram HD trucks with the 5.7-liter gas V-8 now have a six-speed automatic transmission. Other changes include:

  • New steering wheel with auxiliary controls
  • New black grille and bumpers on ST trim

Exterior
Ram HD pickups share headlamps and fenders with the 1500, but the grille is bigger to keep the engine cool while towing big trailers, and the hood is different to make room for the Cummins diesel. The front bumper has aggressive stamping. The single-piece chrome bumper wraps around the front of the truck, giving it a modern look and improved aerodynamics to help fuel economy. Ram HDs with dual rear wheels have sculpted fenders stamped into the sides of the cargo box. Other exterior features include:

  • Adjustable tow mirrors with integrated turn signals
  • 17-inch steel wheels standard; 17-inch aluminum wheels optional
  • Available roof-mounted running lights
  • Power Wagon model features a two-tone color scheme, underbody skid plates, a Warn electric winch rated at 12,000 pounds, distinct stripes and lettering, and 33-inch BFGoodrich off-road tires

Interior
The Ram HD’s cabin features all the high-quality materials and ergonomic and electronic options of the Ram 1500. The available integrated trailer-brake controller eliminates the need for an aftermarket kit to control a trailer’s electric brakes for improved towing control.

The front seats can be equipped with heat and ventilation functions. Rear-seat heating is also optional, as is a heated steering wheel.

The luxurious Laramie Longhorn has full leather seating with laser-etched bolsters, and the front seatbacks have metal buckles (bearing the Ram logo) with magnetic clasps, like a mailbag. An exclusive instrument cluster has the appearance of hand-wrought jewelry with six chrome gauge rings set against a painted taupe silver background and a tooled-metal Laramie Longhorn edition badge. The carpet is protected by specially designed all-weather rubber mats with polished metal badging and removable carpet inserts. The Laramie Longhorn is equipped with all of the standard equipment found on the top-level Ram Laramie plus navigation radio, remote start, a backup camera, front ventilated seats and rear heated seats. Other interior features include:

  • Front bench or bucket seats in cloth or leather
  • Available memory feature for seats, mirrors, pedals and radio
  • Optional power-adjustable pedals
  • Optional surround-sound system
  • Available Mega Cab provides massive interior space
  • Numerous storage options, including in-floor bins

Under the Hood

2012 RAM 2500 review: Our expert's take

The Ram Power Wagon features higher ground clearance, electric-locking front and rear differentials, an electronic disconnecting sway bar, Bilstein shocks and a 4.56 axle ratio for difficult off-road driving. Additional mechanical features include:

  • 383-horsepower, 5.7-liter V-8 with iron block and aluminum cylinder heads, cam-in-block, two valves per cylinder and 400 pounds-feet of torque
  • 350-hp, turbocharged 6.7-liter inline-six-cylinder diesel with iron block and cylinder head, cam-in-block, four valves per cylinder and 650 pounds-feet of torque with the manual, 800 with the automatic

  • Six-speed automatic standard with 5.7-liter gas engine
  • Six-speed automatic optional with 6.7-liter diesel engine

  • Standard electronic stability system (single-rear-wheel models)
  • Standard side curtain airbags

  • We love this truck.

We love this truck. We pull our 28 foot trailer with it. Bought used with a trade in so we could pull a heavier load. Had it for several years and has proven to be a good truck overall.

  • Great truck if you buy new and take care of it

I own this truck for 4 years bought with 140k mi and now it has 200k I spent probably 15k in mechanic and parts I had a problem with everything in this truck from exhaust to fuse box all brake lines now just fixed the head gasket which cost an arm and leg and I’m getting misfires from the camshaft it’s just one thing after the other and never stop I guess if you buy a new one it must be amazing but get rid of it before 100k miles The window opener in the driver side keeps popping off. Fan inside makes too much noise. I own a 5.7 gasoline angine

  • 2012 ram 2500

I have purchased a 2012 now I have 106,000 miles on it so far I replace the fuse box under the hood upper ball joints The emergency brake pads somehow burned up make sure you replace all the hardware The rush is unbelievable on the wheel wells definitely needs a redesign I keep my truck really clean the motor start ticketing at 90,000 miles we call Chitty Chitty Bang Bang I always change the oil. The transmission is very strong 5.7 motor has a lot of torque for gas I love the 8 foot bed and the mega cab the radio has to be updated I replaced it already the air conditioner is cold I put a lower thermostat I didn’t like it sitting at 220 That’s a little high for my taste I put a lower thermostat in it is definitely can pull the weight I also recommend putting a trans cooler on Especially if you going to pulled heavy weight I run e rated tires also nothing less awesome truck all except for the rust lol on the wheel wells .I love the look 👀

  • Hemi engine broke lifters and camshaft replacement

Great comfort, terrible engine life, replaced ignition module default out of pocket. There isn’t any factory recalls on ignition switches for multiple years due to problems with starting and shutting off while driving

  • Cam failure on hemi needs to be recalled

At 96000 miles, the hemi motor suffered roller lifter/cam shaft failure. Approx $7000.00 to fix it. Many other owners have the same problem. Truck has skways been well taken care of. I have owned many vehicles, and cam shaft failure is NOT a problem! No recall, no more Chrysler products for me or my family.

  • Most of my mileage is towing.

Very comfortable heated and cooled seat, good visibility, good fuel economy, and plenty of interior storage. I use my mega cab for towing my 8000 pound travel trailer. Sometimes I forget the travel trailer is behind me.

  • Plenty of power, awesome performance, & bold style

Nothing I've ever owned has given me more pleasure and dependability than my Ram 2500 with the 5.7 Hemi All around awesome truck that performs more like a sports car than a truck, that is until you hit a bumpy road Hauling cross country or bringing the team to the game this truck has everything you need for the job Stylish interior with the classic Ram body - timeless I can't say enough about it I'm finally parting way with my truck to upgrade to a newer model. Hoping that they haven't changed a thing - why mess with perfection
