Expert 2022 RAM 2500 review

our expert's take
Our expert's take

our expert's take

What Is the 2022 Ram Heavy Duty?

The Ram Heavy Duty is a full-size pickup truck aimed at people with serious towing and hauling needs. These are massively capable trucks, and when properly equipped the 3500 version can tow in excess of 37,000 pounds.

The Ram Heavy Duty can seat up to six, and it competes with the Ford Super Duty and Chevrolet Silverado HD. Offered in 2500 and 3500 form, a 410-horsepower, 6.4-liter V-8 engine paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission is standard, while a Cummins turbo-diesel 6.7-liter inline-six that makes 370 or 420 hp and a six-speed automatic is available. The diesel engine makes as much as 1,075 pounds-feet of torque in the 3500. Rear-wheel drive is standard, and four-wheel drive is optional.

What’s New on the 2022 Ram Heavy Duty?

Chrysler’s Uconnect 5 multimedia system has been added to Big Horn and higher trim levels. There’s a new Silver Edition for Big Horn and Lone Star trims, and new available camera features for towing let the driver see what’s behind a trailer using the rearview camera mirror and get a 360-degree view of only the trailer.

What Features in the 2022 Ram Heavy Duty Are Most Important?

Standard features include:

  • Regular cab
  • 8-foot cargo box
  • Rear-wheel drive
  • Eight-speed automatic transmission
  • Bluetooth connectivity

Available features include:

  • Crew cab or Mega cab
  • 6-foot, 4-inch cargo box
  • Four-wheel drive
  • Six-speed automatic transmission (diesel engine)
  • 8.4- or 12-inch touchscreen multimedia system
  • 360-degree camera system
  • Front and rear park assist
  • Blind spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert
  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Lane-keeping assist
  • 50-gallon fuel tank
  • Integrated trailer-brake controller

Should I Buy the 2022 Ram Heavy Duty?

The Ram Heavy Duty is a serious truck meant for completing seriously tough jobs. Then again, so are its rivals from Ford and Chevrolet. What sets the Ram apart from the competition is its driving refinement — especially when equipped with the optional rear air suspension — as well as the quality and design of the interiors in the Laramie Longhorn and Limited trims.

  • Power, beauty, and utility!

Power, beauty, and utility! Haul all week and drive to a cotillion on the weekend! I have received more compliments on this vehicle than any other I have owned, including a customized red and black striped ‘73 Mustang convertible and an ‘02 Z06. It can get up off the line or take me safely into work in a snow storm, all while looking great doing it. Only things it’s missing is a blower, a sun roof, and stereo amp. But then, if it had them, I’d never get out of it.

There has been a occasion where the truck would go max, speed and brakes would not work to stop good thing it corrected itself that time . Second time my pregnant woman was borrowing Her dad's truck and it did the same thing this time. She could not stop and it crashed, and the dealership has been giving us the runaround.First, they say it needs a ECM and it has some type of computer problems they said they updated the computer or something like that. Then they changed their mind on what the problem is. Due to the engine light, keep coming on

I have a 2022 2500 diesel Longhorn, that has had numerous problems with the DEF SOFTWARE. After 3 to 4 trips (50,000 miles) to the Dealership, they replaced the DEF tank and it seemed to fix the problem. I currently have 56,000+ miles with no further problems. Other than that I am extremely pleased with my 2500 Longhorn.

  • 2022 Ram2500

Solid truck and great performance. Normal driving is fine, I use it as my daily driver.....but it also pulls our 40' 5th Wheel from Oklahoma to Colorado with ease and has pulled 4wheelers up a 20ft. embankment, out of a river, lol.

  • 2022 Ram Laramie

This is my third Ram 2500 diesel. I have the Laramie level with the Level A group. The ride is very good for a truck especially a 3/4 ton, quite enough to have a normal conversation. I traded a 2023 Silverado LTZ for this Ram. There was no comparison in the solid closing feel and noise of the doors and the overall much better quality of the interior. The seats are comfortable for long trips. What can you say about the Cummins diesel that isn't already legend. It pulls like crazy, acceleration is good, my fuel mileage is 18.9 mpg with 80% suburban, 20% highway. I've had zero issues and don't expect any. Yes, I would buy another one without hesitation.

  • First Ram. Not perfect, but would buy again.

Have owned my 2022 2500 Tradesman for 14 months now. Very happy overall. Outstanding towing and payload capabilities. Quiet interior. Nice styling. I don't like the dial transmission control. Would prefer it if the infotaimment screen was angled toward the driver instead of flat. Also disappointed with the seating position with the manual seats. Felt like my butt sat too low. Remedied that with an aftermarket shim kit that raised the rear seat height 1/2". Much better. My first RAM. Would buy again.

  • Pretty Solid Truck

I bought my 2022 Ram 2500 Megacab, with the 6.7L Cummins in February 2022. It has the 11" vertical display and thats the only drawback. Like my 2013 Laramie Longhorn, the uconnect system Chrysler has is incredibly unreliable. The screen gets stuck occasionally on the backup cam, or blanks out and restarts. Other than that, I've had zero issues. I've hauled my buddy's 7,200 lb boat from Albuquerque to Brownsville with no problems, and stock trailers between Billings and Cheyenne, and Albuquerque to Wickenburg. The truck is solid. One minor inconvenience is, the black paint will take a beating with the billion rocks being thrown in the west by guys with the wide tires sticking out the side of the fender. Fortunately the windshield sits is high enough to avoid this...but if you're getting the black one, I'd get a clear bra on it, at the dealership!
