2019 Subaru WRX STI Review

from the expert editorial team

What Is the 2019 Subaru WRX?

The Subaru WRX and WRX STI are compact performance sedans with room for up to five people. They have turbocharged engines, performance-oriented all-wheel-drive systems and racy bodywork. The WRX has a 268-horsepower, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, and the high-output WRX STI has a 310-hp, turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder. It also includes other high-performance hardware like Brembo brakes and a driver-controlled center differential. The WRX faces competition from the Honda Civic Si, Ford Focus ST and Volkswagen Golf GTI, while the WRX STI goes up against the VW Golf R, Ford Focus RS and Honda Civic Type R.

What’s New on the 2019 Subaru WRX?

New limited-edition Series.Gray models — 750 for the WRX and 250 for the WRX STI — have a gray exterior, black badges and black 18-inch alloy wheels. WRX STI versions get 19-inch wheels and Bilstein shocks, too. Subaru's EyeSight safety system is now included standard on WRX models with a continuously variable automatic transmission, and updated multimedia systems with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity are offered.

A new air intake, retuned engine computer and high-flow exhaust system result in a 5-hp boost for the WRX STI's engine. Third gear in the WRX STI's six-speed manual transmission has been revised for faster acceleration, according to Subaru.

What Features in the 2019 Subaru WRX Are Most Important?

Unlike many other compact sedans that have front-wheel drive, Subaru’s WRX and WRX STI are distinguished by standard all-wheel drive. Both cars still offer a standard six-speed manual transmission for those interested in shifting for themselves.

Should I Buy the 2019 Subaru WRX?

If you’re looking for entertaining performance and four-season usability in one car, the WRX and WRX STI are worth a look. That said, we're not impressed with the automatic transmission, and trunk space is limited.

Amazing car for the money.

by potterdood from Pelzer, SC on October 22, 2019

I've enjoyed every second of owning this STI. AWD Turbo, 6 speed, is a lot of fun to control. My sons car seat even fit in the back seat safe and comfortably. Read full review

Warranty FAQs

What is a Bumper-to-Bumper warranty?

Often called a basic warranty or new-vehicle warranty, a bumper-to-bumper policy covers components like air conditioning, audio systems, vehicle sensors, fuel systems and major electrical components. Most policies exclude regular maintenance like fluid top offs and oil changes, but a few brands have separate free-maintenance provisions, and those that do offer them is slowly rising. Bumper-to-bumper warranties typically expire faster than powertrain warranties.

What is a Powertrain warranty?

Don't be misled a 10-year or 100,000-mile powertrain warranty doesn't promise a decade of free repairs for your car. It typically covers just the engine and transmission, along with any other moving parts that lead to the wheels, like the driveshaft and constant velocity joints. Some automakers also bundle seat belts and airbags into their powertrain warranties. With a few exceptions, powertrain warranties don't cover regular maintenance like engine tuneups and tire rotations.

What is included in Roadside Assistance?

Some automakers include roadside assistance with their bumper-to-bumper or powertrain warranties, while others have separate policies. These programs cover anything from flat-tire changes and locksmith services to jump-starts and towing. Few reimburse incidental costs like motel rooms (if you have to wait for repairs).

What other services could be included in a warranty?

Some automakers include free scheduled maintenance for items such as oil changes, air filters and tire rotations. Some include consumables including brake pads and windshield wipers; others do not. They are typically for the first couple of years of ownership of a new car.

What does CPO mean?

A certified pre-owned or CPO car has been inspected to meet minimum quality standards and typically includes some type of warranty. While dealers and third parties certify cars, the gold standard is an automaker-certified vehicle that provides a factory-backed warranty, often extending the original coverage. Vehicles must be in excellent condition and have low miles and wear to be certified, which is why off-lease vehicles feed many CPO programs.
