Mazda has redesigned the CX-5 for 2017, and our First Drive found at least 
 five reasons it should be on your compact SUV shopping list.

Registration data shows 280,000 new light-duty diesel vehicles registered 
 in 2016 with a total of 8 million on the road.

Mazda now will install airbag inflators with new type of propellant, which 
 replaces a 2016 recall that made temporary repairs.

The automaker announced the CX-8 will go on sale in Japan later this year, 
 though there are no U.S. plans yet.

Approximately 205,000 model-year 2007-11 Mazda CX-7 and CX-9 SUVs 
 and model-year 2009-11 Mazda6 sedans are being recalled.

Ford is resisting a recall on a different Takata airbag inflator as another 
 death is linked to the type of inflators already recalled.

The GT is fully redesigned and adds a turbocharged GT Sport as a 
 performance model to take on a growing field of compact hatchbacks.

The focus of the 2018 Hyundai Sonata's mid-cycle refresh was the exterior, 
 but the interior and chassis got meaningful small tweaks as well.
