our expert's take

A Ford with an attitude.

Better yet, a Ford truck with an attitude, a Harley-Davidson edition of the full-size Ford F-Series SuperCrew with a 340-h.p., supercharged rendition of Ford’s 5.4-liter V-8.

The Harley Ford is the third joint venture rendition since the auto and cycle makers teamed up to produce a limited-edition lifestyle vehicle to showcase each other’s talents.

The first joint-venture machine was a Super Cab in 2000 followed by a SuperCrew in ’01 and an update for ’02.

SuperCrew means it has four swing-out doors for easy entry/exit, while Super Cab came with swing-outs upfront, swing-back access doors in the rear.

What sets the Harley apart from a regular F-150, in addition to all the Harley trim, is the supercharged V-8 that delivers 80 more horsepower than the nonboosted 5.4-liter as well as 425 foot-pounds of torque, up from 350 foot-pounds in the regular.

The Harley Ford steps lively–very lively. It just doesn’t step past the filling station often. With a 12 m.p.g. city/16 m.p.g. highway rating you’ll at least be able to show off your Harley Ford to all those Ford Excursion owners parked at the same pumps.

For a full-size pickup it handles well, thanks to a suspension tuned to complement the power and to the vehicle being lowered by an inch to give it better road stability.

The Harley contribution comes from flame pinstriping both outside and on the center console inside; and the Harley-Davidson bar and shield embossed on the parking lamp lenses, center wheel caps, quarter panels, tailgate and seat backs. No flames or shields on the cupholders, however. No need to overdo a good thing.

The Harley Ford also has a novel chrome billet grille, large headlamps, rivet design around the chromed cast aluminum wheels, chrome exhaust tips, quad captain’s chairs with perforated leather, huge front and rear center consoles, brushed stainless steel/rubber pedals and a “spun metal” instrument cluster.

Base price: $35,780, including such goodies as air conditioning, AM/FM stereo, power adjustable pedals, power windows/locks/mirrors/driver’s seat and four-wheel anti-lock brakes.

Our test vehicle added a power moonroof at $810, slide-open rear window at $125, cargo box cage/extender for $195, heated front seats at $245, and six-disc CD changer at $295, all the options available on the machine. Add $740 for freight.

The Ford/Harley pact also calls for co-branded clothing and accessories.

  • My 2002 F150 is still on the road with 299,000 miles on

My 2002 F150 is still on the road with 299,000 miles on it. It was bought from a guy in FL, so there is no rust on it. I live in OH and have it oiled underneath every year to protect it from salt damage. Great truck!!

  • Great truck if you take care of her.

Bought this truck ('02 F150 FX4) in 2022 with 160k miles on it. I did a complete top to bottom fluid change, replaced the spark plugs, coil packs and intake manifold. She runs grate now. Also cleaned up and modernized with a new raptor style grill, led head and tail lights and some other options. Replaced the old radio/cd changer with a 2 din that offers Google maps, sirius and a back up camera. All my clean up and mods were about $2,500 with me doing the labor. She now looks and runs great with a lot of the features of a newer truck at 1/5 the price and worth double what I paid for her.

I bought 2002 Ford F-150 Lariat 4X4 Super Duty Super Cab and it already has 260,000 miles on it and still runs like a horse! Great truck if you take care of it.

  • Un-killable

My dad bought my truck used in 2017. It had been a one owner by a young lady that used it to pull a horse trailer for the first 143,xxx miles of its life. He gave a used car dealer $3,900 for it with no overdrive. My dad drove it for 2 years and put almost 200,000 miles on it without a tune-up. When the 2 valve 5.4 triton was down to a crawl, he parked it on 3 cylinders. It sat for nine months, while the whole time I kept telling him I could tune it up and put it back in service. Needless to say he balked on the idea, so I finally saved the $1.200 he wanted for it, and bought it from him. I spent $200 on a brand new battery, and $250 for new motorcraft plugs and edelbrock performance coil on plug packs. And surprisingly the truck came back to life. I was able to get almost 9,000 miles out of it before I was hit head on by a 07 BMW a month ago. BUT, once I have the money or parts it will take to fix the front left wheel and steering assembly, it'll be back on the highway screaming again! It's the best truck I've ever owned much less driven in my entire life and I'm 31. Built Ford tough REALLY means what they say!

  • Reliable Daily Driver

I bought this truck when I was still in college, as it was one of the few trucks that I could afford in cash ($6500). I have driven it for 5 years and 60k miles (currently at 208k miles) without any significant issues. Aside from regular oil changes, the only repairs I've had to do are: one bad coil and a short on the overdrive wire in the steering column. It has some creature comforts, like power seats and on-the-fly 4x4, but it's pretty utilitarian. However, with the addition of a 2-din touchscreen stereo and a backup camera, it's enough for me. Still has plenty of get-up-and-go. I've considered using it as a trade-in, but it's been so good to me, I'm not sure I will find a more reliable truck. Plus, considering its age, it still cleans up nicely and I don't feel too bad when it gets scratched up when offroading or having three rambunctious dogs in the back seat. My only complaints with the truck are the wheel lug pattern and the visibility. The 5-lug wheel pattern isn't as common as the 6-lug wheel pattern that every F150 after 2004 uses, so wheel options are limited. To make it worse, the particular wheels I'm running use the flat flanged lug nuts and not the more common tapered ones. As for visibility, the backup camera has been a worthwhile investment, but, for as long as it is, the side mirrors are a little small. In the process of buying some Expedition towing mirrors (Supercrew doors match the Expedition doors, not the F150 Regular and Supercab). I just moved to Northern Utah from Southern California, so I will get a chance to test it out in the snow in the upcoming months.

  • Love this truck

‘02 lariat super crew 4x4 5.4, currently has 219k+. My 4th Ford truck and all were great. My ‘02 has never stranded me, only wish it had better cup holders and better gas mileage. I plan on keeping it till I run it into the ground or someone wrecks it, whichever comes first.

  • Powerful and Reliable

Has 350,000 miles on it and still powerful and reliable. Never any major repairs only regular maintenance definitely the best! I do love it when people look over at the truck when you crank it up in the parking lot. It gets stares when you're riding down the road as well. Definitely recommend this truck!
