2019 Jaguar XE Review

from the expert editorial team

What Is the 2019 Jaguar XE?

The Jaguar XE is a compact luxury sports sedan that seats up to five people. It offers several engines: a 247-horsepower, turbocharged 2.0-liter gas four-cylinder; a 180-hp, turbo-diesel 2.0-liter four-cylinder; a 296-hp, turbocharged 2.0-liter gas four-cylinder; and a 380-hp, supercharged 3.0-liter gas V-6. All engines work with an eight-speed automatic transmission, and rear- and all-wheel drive are offered. Competitors include the BMW 3 Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class and Audi A4. The XE has been refreshed for the 2020 model year.

What’s New on the 2019 Jaguar XE?

All XEs now have Jaguar’s InControl Touch Pro multimedia system, which gets minor changes this year. There’s also a new Landmark Edition with special exterior and interior cues.

A new high-performance XE SV Project 8 is also available. Powered by a 592-hp, supercharged 5.0-liter V-8 engine, the SV Project 8 is hand-built in England and can reach a top speed of 200 mph. Features include manually adjustable ride height and aerodynamics, as well as carbon-ceramic brakes. The SV Project 8 seats four, and only 300 will be built worldwide.

What Features in the 2019 Jaguar XE Are Most Important?

Standard features include rain-sensing windshield wipers, heated side mirrors, dual-zone climate control, a 10-inch touchscreen multimedia system and Bluetooth streaming audio. Available features include power-folding side mirrors, a 40/20/40-split folding backseat, a Meridian stereo, leather upholstery, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, navigation, a Wi-Fi hot spot (data subscription required after initial trial), lane keep assist, and blind spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert.

Should I Buy the 2019 Jaguar XE?

XE highlights include steering feel, handling and ride comfort. The supercharged V-6 is a strong performer, too. Downsides include poor rear visibility, a snug cabin and inconsistent interior materials. You may be able to find a deal on a 2019 XE as dealers look to make room for the updated 2020 model.

Warranty FAQs

What is a Bumper-to-Bumper warranty?

Often called a basic warranty or new-vehicle warranty, a bumper-to-bumper policy covers components like air conditioning, audio systems, vehicle sensors, fuel systems and major electrical components. Most policies exclude regular maintenance like fluid top offs and oil changes, but a few brands have separate free-maintenance provisions, and those that do offer them is slowly rising. Bumper-to-bumper warranties typically expire faster than powertrain warranties.

What is a Powertrain warranty?

Don't be misled a 10-year or 100,000-mile powertrain warranty doesn't promise a decade of free repairs for your car. It typically covers just the engine and transmission, along with any other moving parts that lead to the wheels, like the driveshaft and constant velocity joints. Some automakers also bundle seat belts and airbags into their powertrain warranties. With a few exceptions, powertrain warranties don't cover regular maintenance like engine tuneups and tire rotations.

What is included in Roadside Assistance?

Some automakers include roadside assistance with their bumper-to-bumper or powertrain warranties, while others have separate policies. These programs cover anything from flat-tire changes and locksmith services to jump-starts and towing. Few reimburse incidental costs like motel rooms (if you have to wait for repairs).

What other services could be included in a warranty?

Some automakers include free scheduled maintenance for items such as oil changes, air filters and tire rotations. Some include consumables including brake pads and windshield wipers; others do not. They are typically for the first couple of years of ownership of a new car.

What does CPO mean?

A certified pre-owned or CPO car has been inspected to meet minimum quality standards and typically includes some type of warranty. While dealers and third parties certify cars, the gold standard is an automaker-certified vehicle that provides a factory-backed warranty, often extending the original coverage. Vehicles must be in excellent condition and have low miles and wear to be certified, which is why off-lease vehicles feed many CPO programs.
