Most significant changes: New key fob design

Price change: Base prices are $200 higher on all models. Destination charge is unchanged at $920.

On sale: Late fall

Which should you buy, 2019 or 2020? 2019. No significant changes for 2020, and dealers should have plenty of leftover 2019s available with discounts.

Mazda’s mid-size Mazda6 sedan sees minimal changes for 2020. A new smart key fob design places the lock-and-unlock and panic buttons on an edge of the fob, and the top-line Signature model gets a new badge.

Related: Mazda3: Which Should You Buy, 2019 or 2020?

Sales of the Mazda6 have continued to fall in calendar year 2019, dropping more than 30 percent through October to 18,380 units, another sign of the massive migration of buyers to crossover SUVs. Mazda has said it intends to offer a diesel engine and all-wheel drive in the Mazda6, but neither has materialized.

For those still interested in sedans, the Mazda6 is a sporty, stylish alternative to cars such as the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord and Hyundai Sonata. All models possess athletic handling ability, a roomy interior with luxurious touches, and an impressive array of standard safety features. On the downside, the infotainment system is operated through an 8-inch touchscreen that allows changes only when the car is stopped, and it’s clunky to use.

The base Sport model and the Touring come with a 187-horsepower, 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that delivers decent fuel economy but feels sluggish at low speeds. The Grand Touring, Grand Touring Reserve and Signature use a turbocharged 2.5-liter that generates 227 hp with regular gas and 250 with premium, and it provides more satisfying acceleration. Both engines team with a six-speed automatic transmission.

Prices start at $24,920 (including destination) for the Sport, and the Grand Touring is $2,600 more than that. The Grand Touring is $30,620, the Grant Touring Reserve checks in at $33,120 and the Signature is a hefty $36,220, but with sales of the Mazda 6 slipping, dealers should be offering generous discounts. There are no individual options or packages available, so the only choices are the different trim levels and their standard content.

The 2020 models weren’t yet at dealerships, and Mazda would only say that they should arrive later in the fall.

Interior design needs some help, but thats just my opinion. But the car itself drives great, handles really well and is an enjoyable, fun, drive

  • Best choice I've made for a car in a long time!

Like a bmw but better. Has all aspects that my finances bimmer has but more comfortable and more room. The oy thing I found was it has an issue with unlocking all door using the fob.

  • Love my 6

I love my 19 grand touring. It’s a great value. It feels like it’s well built. It’s comfy. And not many on the road. I like to bump it. Great Bose sound. But at 45k miles It’s been in the shop to many times. New turbo, new exhaust manifold, new fuel injector, new moldings - exterior, 5 check engine lights, about $7k in repairs. Thankfully all covered under warranty. I bought it with certified preowned. I’ll keep it till the 100k warranty runs out.

  • A very lasting look

This cars look will not age. In 10 years the cars look still be just as nice. The front is rooming and I he doors and dash blind very nicely with 3 colors. Back set has more room then my 3 but little short in the leg area still but not bad. A lot of trunk room. Handles great. After I got use to using the apple play screen it works well. I can move the menu by asking Siri’s or google. The safety is the biggest reason why I got it.

  • Excellent handling! Fun to drive, very responsive!

I LOVE my car!!! It handles so well! It hugs the road & has a nice stiff suspension. Very enjoyable & I especially appreciate all the safety features, the main reason for purchasing the car! It checked all the boxes of what my husband & I wanted in a car! You get a lot of value in a Mazda! Also like the CPO (Certified Pre Owned Warranty) that shows Mazda’s confidence in their product! Highly recommend a Mazda! Drive one - it sells itself!

  • My Second Mazda6

I had a 2015 Mazda6 Touring and kept it for five years. I never had a single problem with it during that time. I found a new 2019 Mazda6 Signature in 2020 and bought it. So far so good. I can't understand why this car is not more popular. The outside looks great, the interior is luxurious, and it drives great. I have got lots of compliments on the looks of both cars. I would most defiantly give a Mazda6 a lot of consideration if you looking for a car. Everybody has a SUV, a Camry, or an Accord. You'll stand out of crowd with a Mazda6.

  • Luxury car at budget price

Mazda makes cars that are between Camry/Accord and luxury in terms of quality, at extremely affordable pricing. The sheer value this car brings in terms of price, performance, features, and driving experience are simply unbelievable.

  • Tremendous Value!

Mazda hit a home run with the design and engineering on the Mazda6. Although the 2.5L turbo engine has pep, is not tuned for ultra performance. Seating is sport - comfortable. Rear seating is tremendous. Infotainment system, although taking long time to boot from cold start, is fairly well designed, easy to navigate via console knobs, Premium audio is clear and bright, though lacks low-end woompf. Voice-recognition NAV system is big help while driving. Largely inner city driving, my MPG = 21.

  • Best car i have owned

This vehicle is not as quick off the line as an Accord or Camry, but it is quieter, has better tech, better steering, a nicer interior and a MUCH better looking exterior. I have more faith in Mazda's tried and true 2.5 -6 speed auto combo than the 8 or 10 speeds in the above, and I don't want a CVT. Just crossed 1000 miles and there isn't a single issue. No creaks or rattles, no poor panel fitment, the car was built flawlessly. So no it isn't as fast, and the trunk isnt as big, and NBA stars won't fit in my backseat. In every other way this car is superior and I absolutely love it!

  • A big and roomy car

This is a big body car, fills the lanes and the safety features are fun to play with, cruise adaptation. This car gets 40.1 mpg on the highway, but I do drive like a grandpa, but it rides and performs well. happy with the 6 and I look forward to a few years of ownership.
