2021 BMW X4 M review: Our expert's take

What Is the 2021 BMW X4?

The BMW X4 is a five-seat compact luxury SUV with coupelike styling and four conventional doors. Power comes from a standard 248-horsepower, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine; a 382-hp, turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six goes in the M40i version, while the X4 M gets a 473-hp, turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder. Every engine works with an eight-speed automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive is standard. Competitors include the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque and Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class.

What’s New on the 2021 BMW X4?

Android Auto smartphone connectivity joins Apple CarPlay, and satellite radio is also now standard. Newly standard active safety features include blind spot warning and lane departure warning.

What Features in the 2021 BMW X4 Are Most Important?

Standard features include:

  • Panoramic moonroof
  • Power liftgate
  • Forward collision warning with city collision mitigation
  • Navigation with 10.25-inch touchscreen
  • Digital instrument panel

Available features include:

  • Heated steering wheel
  • Heated and ventilated front seats
  • Wireless device charging
  • Wi-Fi hot spot (data subscription required after trial)

Should I Buy the 2021 BMW X4?

If you’re looking for a sporty alternative to a traditional compact luxury SUV, the X4 is worth a look thanks to its strong available engines and athletic handling. You pay a lot more for the privilege, however, and get less utility in return; the raked roofline takes a chunk out of the cargo area.
