Ford Probe

The Ford Probe was introduced for 1989 as a sporty, affordable coupe to compete in the growing market for athletic compact cars. Developed in collaboration with Mazda, the Probe shared its front-wheel-drive underpinnings with the Mazda MX-6. Ford had initially intended the Probe to be the replacement for the aging Fox-body Ford Mustang, but a strong backlash from Mustang enthusiasts caused the company to change course. Ford freshened the existing Mustang and sold the Probe alongside it. The first-generation Probe ran from 1989-92, and its second-gen successor ran from 1993-97; both generations offered a choice of four-cylinder or V-6 power.

1993-1997 Probe

Ford again collaborated with Mazda on the redesigned 1993 Probe, which was built at a joint-venture plant in Flat Rock, Mich. A longer wheelbase, wider track and cab-forward styling gave the new Probe a sleek, athletic look and also helped deliver crisp handling. Buyers could choose between a 115-horsepower, 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine or a 164-hp, 2.5-liter V-6, the latter engine coming standard in the higher-performance GT trim. The Probe saw minor annual revisions before it was discontinued after the 1997 model year; the redesigned Mustang that debuted for 1994 likely stole some of the Probe’s sales thunder.
