Expert 2026 Subaru BRZ review

subaru brz 2026 exterior oem 02 jpg

Key Points:

  • The 2026 BRZ is a budget-friendly 228-horsepower, rear-wheel-drive sports car that starts at $37,055 (all prices include $1,195 destination charge).
  • Limited-edition Series.Yellow debuts for the 2026 Subaru BRZ
  • Entry-level Premium trim discontinued

The unlikely product of a union between Toyota (which sells its version as the GR86) and Subaru, the BRZ is a vehicle that doesn’t make a lot of sense in either brand’s lineup but has delighted buyers for over a decade. A compact, lightweight, rear-wheel-drive sports car, the BRZ is a simple tool for pure driving pleasure.

For the 2026 model year, the BRZ’s entry-level Premium trim has been discontinued, as Subaru says it accounted for less than 10% of sales in 2025. Accounting for an even smaller share of the BRZ’s volume will be the new limited-production Series.Yellow, which sports an exclusive color combination outside and in but will only be built in extremely small numbers.

Release Date and Pricing

The 2026 Subaru BRZ will go on sale early in 2026. Full pricing is as follows:

  • Limited: $37,055
  • tS: $39,555
  • Series.Yellow: $40,555

Trim Levels

The entry-level BRZ Limited rides on matte-gray 18-inch wheels and boasts Michelin Pilot Sport 4 summer performance tires, a limited-slip differential, LED headlights and taillights, and keyless entry and start. Inside, the front seats are manually adjustable, but synthetic suede upholstery and aluminum pedals contribute to a sporty air. The BRZ also includes creature comforts such as heated front seats and dual-zone automatic climate control. Cabin tech consists of a 7-inch digital instrument panel and an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Subaru’s EyeSight advanced driver-assist tech suite is standard on every 2026 BRZ. It includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitors, rear cross-traffic alert and automatic high beams. Reverse automatic braking is optional.

One step up, the BRZ tS rides on a suspension tuned by STI, Subaru’s in-house tuning arm, as well as dark-gray wheels and Brembo brakes featuring larger rotors and calipers. Its interior is distinguished by blue stitching instead of the Limited’s red.

Limited to just 350 units, the Series.Yellow is equipped identically to the tS but finished in exclusive Sunrise Yellow paint and matte-black wheels. The theme continues inside, with black upholstery featuring yellow contrast stitching.

Powertrain Specs and MPG

The rear-wheel-drive BRZ is an outlier in Subaru’s lineup, which otherwise consists of exclusively all-wheel-drive vehicles. A 2.4-liter flat-four-cylinder engine powers the little rear-drive sports car with 228 horsepower and 184 pounds-feet of torque. Most BRZs are only available with a six-speed manual transmission; a six-speed automatic is optional on the entry-level Limited trim for $850.

While official EPA estimates for the 2026 model are not yet available, Subaru says the figures do not change from the 2025 model’s EPA ratings. The manual-transmission BRZ returns 20/27/22 mpg city/highway/combined, while the automatic is rated at 21/30/25 mpg.
