2021 Subaru Outback review
My family has owned Subarus for a very long time, starting in the late 90's with my parents, an 89 Legacy L wagon, then a 2005 Outback XT, continuing with my wife and I. Our last Subaru, a 2002 Legacy GT wagon (a pretty rare car here in the US, even the Subaru-crazy Portland-metro area) was stolen during Covid. We went Subaru-less until June 8 2026, when we picked up the 45000 mile 2021 Outback XT Limited. The Limited trim is one rung below the top-trim Touring XT and above the Onxy XT. For the curious, XT= the turbo engine version, which I HIGHLY recommend if you actually enjoy driving your car like I do (and other perks). Why did we choose the Limited XT over a truck or another SUV/crossover? 1) The styling. Love it or hate it, wagons are just cool. They've grown on me. It's just different from everything else on the road. 2) I like the carlike ride, driving dynamics, comfort, but the SUV-like interior space, ground clearance and driving position (OB's have 8.7 inches of ground clearance). The Limited trim is the best one in my opinion because you get upgraded interior sound-deadening (thicker window glass, more insulation), upgraded stereo (which sounds awesome), and memory for the driver seat (2 presets). Here's what I like: It's a Subaru without the Subaru quirks from prior generations. It's quiet inside. Just as quiet or more than our Volvo XC90 V8. Even the 2019 3.6R Touring we test drove was noisier inside. The ride is very smooth. Seats are very comfortable for long-hauls. Vancouver, WA to Bend, OR and no aches or pains or cramps. Handling is also good, better than a SUV. This isn't nimble like a Miata or Honda Civic, but for a 3900 lb car it's great. The powertrain. I love the 2.4 turbo engine. It's smooth, quiet, and makes all its torque by 2000 RPM. The non-turbo Outback gets along okay without the 2.5 non-turbo, but the XT makes a huge difference when you want it. It's much faster than the 3.6R it replaced and gets better fuel economy. Personally, unless you want the extra fuel economy, there's no reason not to get the XT. Fuel economy? Highway cruising 70-75 mph is 28 mpg. Pulling grades or a load of gear drops it to 27 mpg. Heavy-footed driving in town and the mileage is rough at times: I saw a low 17.5 once, but it's usually 22 to 23 in town if I keep my foot out of it (that's hard). Here's what I'm not sold on after over a month of ownership. The CVT: If you're coming from only driving conventional automatics, there's a learning curve on how to drive it smoothly. Smooth is the keyword. let the transmission do the work. You can paddle shift it, but it's better to leave it in D. The power delivery could be better. Again, it's a CVT. Off the line foot to the floor and there's a waiting period before it goes. However, like 30 to 80 mph is wild! Like 3 seconds, and onramps are fun! Again, fuel economy isn't fantastic, real-world mixed driving is 22-23 mpg. The infotainment system: Starlink will require getting used to. None of our cars have ever had one, so it's not a big deal for me, but someone used to one may have moments of frustration with the lag and slow response to inputs. Just be patient and it gets bearable over time. Android Auto is USB tether-only along with CarPlay. It works fine, but again...laggy. The display washes out some in sunlight, so you may have to turn the dimmer up. I had to make a habit of turning off auto stop start as soon as I start the engine now. I despise auto stop-start! Whose idea was that anyway? So, should you get a Gen 6 Outback. Yes. The Gen 7's are what I consider blasphemy for Subie folks like me...they now look like everything else on the road, but that's here nor there. I really like the XT and it will be our car for a good while.

2018 Hyundai TUCSON review
Let me add to the engine problems. Overall I really like this vehicle. We have taken many trips and enjoy the feel on the road. Maintenance has not been a major issue until recently. It started using oil on a regular basis. About a quart every two to three weeks. At around 92k miles it is now in the shop waiting to see if Hyundai will honor their warranty. It needs a new engine. It runs ok now, for a sewing machine. Hopefully Hyundai will honor their warranty and I can get another 90k miles out of the vehicle.

2018 Jeep Wrangler review
Jeep passing jobs have been corroding at welds & hinges due to 2 diff. Metals built together. Issue for 15+ years!, recalled opens need to be addressed, my 3 rd wrangler and loved it! Great freedom ride, sport driven, outdoorsy attitude, love Jeep Wrangler the makers need to fix this cheap paint job causing our jeeps to rust prematurely!

2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee review

2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee review
I've owned this for 6+ years. Only 18,300 miles. So, not what I expected when I bought it. I anticipated driving to many hot air balloon events across the country. But, then COVID and work from home. Now retired. No need to drive a lot. I've ensured that all maintenance is done as needed (maybe more often than needed). Other than a minor parking lot ding (not even a note apologizing), it's pristine. Side note: my dealership really wants this as a trade-in. But, I'm not seeing the advantage.

2018 Jeep Wrangler review
I am new to Wrangler and have not had it long enough to speak to the overall reliability. However, it has been every bit of what I had expected. I am glad I got the JL as it has many preferred features over the JK. I am keeping mine stock but a buyer can do anything they like to modify their Jeep. It is a true do what you like vehicle, very versatile. Enjoy.

Even the 2019 3.6R Touring we test drove was noisier inside. The ride is very smooth. Seats are very comfortable for long-hauls. Vancouver, WA to Bend, OR and no aches or pains or cramps. Handling is also good, better than a SUV. This isn't nimble like a Miata or Honda Civic, but for a 3900 lb car it's great. The powertrain. I love the 2.4 turbo engine. It's smooth, quiet, and makes all its torque by 2000 RPM. The non-turbo Outback gets along okay without the 2.5 non-turbo, but the XT makes a huge difference when you want it. It's much faster than the 3.6R it replaced and gets better fuel economy. Personally, unless you want the extra fuel economy, there's no reason not to get the XT. Fuel economy? Highway cruising 70-75 mph is 28 mpg. Pulling grades or a load of gear drops it to 27 mpg. Heavy-footed driving in town and the mileage is rough at times: I saw a low 17.5 once, but it's usually 22 to 23 in town if I keep my foot out of it (that's hard). Here's what I'm not sold on after over a month of ownership. The CVT: If you're coming from only driving conventional automatics, there's a learning curve on how to drive it smoothly. Smooth is the keyword. let the transmission do the work. You can paddle shift it, but it's better to leave it in D. The power delivery could be better. Again, it's a CVT. Off the line foot to the floor and there's a waiting period before it goes. However, like 30 to 80 mph is wild! Like 3 seconds, and onramps are fun! Again, fuel economy isn't fantastic, real-world mixed driving is 22-23 mpg. The infotainment system: Starlink will require getting used to. None of our cars have ever had one, so it's not a big deal for me, but someone used to one may have moments of frustration with the lag and slow response to inputs. Just be patient and it gets bearable over time. Android Auto is USB tether-only along with CarPlay. It works fine, but again...laggy. The display washes out some in sunlight, so you may have to turn the dimmer up. I had to make a habit of turning off auto stop start as soon as I start the engine now. I despise auto stop-start! Whose idea was that anyway? So, should you get a Gen 6 Outback. Yes. The Gen 7's are what I consider blasphemy for Subie folks like me...they now look like everything else on the road, but that's here nor there. I really like the XT and it will be our car for a good while.

2010 Subaru Forester review
This is a follow up review, I did have to change the head gaskets out on my 2010 forester. I've seen this is common, once again, the work is able to be done by a DIY mechanic. Since 2020 Ive had to change the ignition coil, spark plug wires, head gaskets in February of 2024, and also the crankshaft position sensor. The car had 165,000 miles when the head gaskets needed changed. So far it has 173,000 miles and still runs well. Also changed were the clutch and throwout beairng, and another timing belt change. It still runs very well, the exhaust is getting rusty and have had to fix that, overall its been a good car. I've owned it for 12 years and the ability to work on it yourself is what I really like about it, it isn't fast, but its quite utilitarian and my dog loves it as well. So if you don't mind working on your own stuff its one of the easiest cars to work on with the way the engine is oriented in the longitudinal position. I've always changed the oil every 4-5000 miles since I've had it, the heads and valves were completely clean. I'd say if one keeps up the servicing on these they are good vehicles to own. Not looking forward to when it blows, they don't make plain cars like this now adays.

2020 BMW X3 review
This is my 2nd BMW after keeping my previous 528 for over a dozen years ! Still going strong but had to change. After test driving a few, came back to BMW... Its like Apple, once you get an iPhone, it is hard to switch ! Bought a CPO, which gives us more time. Nice car. Good power. Have to constantly check the speedometer to ensure we stay within limits ! 30mpg avg with the longest and widest roof rail base for outdoor gear at a price that made sense. 2nd row middle seat folds down individually for skis and paddles. Remote start on the vw app is great for cooling the interior down on a 100 degree day from a distance. Rear seat door opening and leg room is huge great for elders to enter easily and for parents loading car seats.

2019 Mazda CX-5 review
This is my second CX-5. This first was a 2016 I bought in 2019 and loved tremendously and then it was totaled when I was rear-ended by someone texting and driving during Covid. I drove a sort of hand-me-down Jeep for a while during the weird Covid period when everything was uncertain but knew I wanted another CX-5 as soon as I felt financially comfortable. The car is extremely comfortable, handles well and has a beautiful streamlined and simply classic look. My partner who is a die-hard Mercedes snob even loves it!

2023 Buick Envision review
Just had my first major car repair at 44k miles. Some steering sensor that could cause me to lose power steering. Had I not had the extended warranty I would be responsible for the $5k repair bill. We are barely out of the manufacturers warranty! Other than that, I love this car but already expecting to get rid of in the next year due to the unknown.

I've owed the rogue SV for some 9 months and I'm very pleased with the ride, performance and reliability . Prior to me purchased this car I rented a bunch of competitors to narrow down my choice. The Rogue has alot of features that really come in handy. It's a very thought out vehicle. On long highway trips it holds the road very steadily at 90 MPH and my gas consumption was in the low 40's. For the money to me it's the best value out there

Power beyond reason and body lines that defy modern convention. This is a motor carriage, make no mistake, this is not an automobile it is a beautifully appointed machine. Every inch of this vehicle astounds, the command of power leaves onlookers struck dumb. The engine echos with the wining churn of an F1 car. It pushes through the streets hungry for open road, downshifting on a highway will give you goosebumps. If I could have one car forever it would be this car. I wouldn't trade this car for anything. If you have the chance, buy one immediately.

2023 Hyundai TUCSON review
I've had this vehicle limited fwd edition over a year now and it's still awesome as the first day I bought it. Smoother ride and quieter ride than the Honda CRV or the Toyota RAV4. I love that it has GDI and multiport injection which the competition does not. I also love that it has a regular transmission and not a CVT. This vehicle comes with all the luxuries my old Cadillacs had plus a lot more features. This car has plenty of pick up and go. You just have to learn to push down on the accelerator not punch it. I would highly recommend this to anyone in the small SUV class. Cause believe me I test drove them all, and this was by far the quietest smoothest ride and most comfortable car that I test drove.

2020 Acura MDX review
Purchased a 2020 Acura MDX in August 2024. Very reliable, luxury, decent on gas that has a nice V6 engine. I like the 2 screen display, the on and off button for the radio is fairly cheap. Love the LED front lights! So far so good!
