Sharing much of the same underpinnings with the Chevrolet Silverado heavy-duty pickup truck, the GMC Sierra HD provides truck buyers with a bit more style and luxury — especially in Denali trim. Competitors include the Ford F-Series Super Duty and Ram 2500 and 3500.

• Available 397-hp, turbo-diesel 6.6-liter V-8 makes 765 pounds-feet of torque
• Both engines work with a six-speed automatic transmission
• Turbo-diesel has an exhaust-brake system that provides greater control on downhill grades and reduced brake-pad wear
• Rear- or four-wheel drive
