2020 Land Rover Range Rover Sport Review

from the Cars.com expert editorial team

What Is the 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Sport?

The Land Rover Range Rover Sport uses a platform derived from Land Rover’s expensive flagship, the Range Rover. As is the norm with modern Land Rovers, the Range Rover Sport blends luxury, technology and off-road capability. It uses a lightweight aluminum structure, has standard full-time four-wheel drive and offers a range of drivetrains, including a plug-in hybrid setup.

Available engines include a 355- or 395-horsepower, turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six mild hybrid; a 254-hp, turbo-diesel 3.0-liter V-6; a 398-hp plug-in hybrid drivetrain and a supercharged 5.0-liter V-8 with either 518 or 575 hp. All engines pair with an eight-speed automatic transmission. A third-row seat is available and increases seating capacity to seven. Competitors include the BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class, Audi Q7 and Porsche Cayenne.

What’s New on the 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Sport?

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity is now standard. Gloss-black 22-inch wheels are available.

What Features in the 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Sport Are Most Important?

Available luxury creature comforts include a heated steering wheel, leather seating surfaces, heated front and rear seats, a cooled center console box for drinks and a Meridian premium stereo. Adaptive cruise control with steering assist is also available. An adjustable air suspension is standard.

2020 Land Rover Range Rover Sport vs. 2020 BMW X5: How Do They Compare?

Land Rover has long been known for its luxurious and well-appointed interiors, with the Range Rover Sport offering a look and feel arguably a cut above the BMW. The X5 offers more nimble handling on pavement, while the Range Rover Sport is more capable off-road. Neither is inexpensive, but the Range Rover Sport can be especially pricey with options.

Should I Buy the 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Sport?

The Range Rover Sport is classy, stylish and offers a lot of off-road capability – for a price. Pronounced body roll and a small third row are negatives, along with Land Rover’s reputation for electronics issues.

Warranty FAQs

What is a Bumper-to-Bumper warranty?

Often called a basic warranty or new-vehicle warranty, a bumper-to-bumper policy covers components like air conditioning, audio systems, vehicle sensors, fuel systems and major electrical components. Most policies exclude regular maintenance like fluid top offs and oil changes, but a few brands have separate free-maintenance provisions, and those that do offer them is slowly rising. Bumper-to-bumper warranties typically expire faster than powertrain warranties.

What is a Powertrain warranty?

Don't be misled a 10-year or 100,000-mile powertrain warranty doesn't promise a decade of free repairs for your car. It typically covers just the engine and transmission, along with any other moving parts that lead to the wheels, like the driveshaft and constant velocity joints. Some automakers also bundle seat belts and airbags into their powertrain warranties. With a few exceptions, powertrain warranties don't cover regular maintenance like engine tuneups and tire rotations.

What is included in Roadside Assistance?

Some automakers include roadside assistance with their bumper-to-bumper or powertrain warranties, while others have separate policies. These programs cover anything from flat-tire changes and locksmith services to jump-starts and towing. Few reimburse incidental costs like motel rooms (if you have to wait for repairs).

What other services could be included in a warranty?

Some automakers include free scheduled maintenance for items such as oil changes, air filters and tire rotations. Some include consumables including brake pads and windshield wipers; others do not. They are typically for the first couple of years of ownership of a new car.

What does CPO mean?

A certified pre-owned or CPO car has been inspected to meet minimum quality standards and typically includes some type of warranty. While dealers and third parties certify cars, the gold standard is an automaker-certified vehicle that provides a factory-backed warranty, often extending the original coverage. Vehicles must be in excellent condition and have low miles and wear to be certified, which is why off-lease vehicles feed many CPO programs.
