Mazda CX-5

The redesigned 2017 CX-5 wasn’t a dramatic departure from the first-generation model, but it nonetheless brought fresh styling and several newly available features, including a heated steering wheel, reclining rear seatbacks and a power liftgate. The previous-generation CX-5’s 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and six-speed manual transmission were dropped, leaving only a 187-horsepower, 2.5-liter four-cylinder paired with a six-speed automatic. Upscale Grand Touring Reserve and Signature trims were added for 2019, along with an available turbo 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that made up to 250 hp. A turbo-diesel 2.2-liter four-cylinder became available late in the 2019 model year, but few CX-5s were ordered with it and the engine was dropped for 2020. A Carbon Edition trim and updated infotainment system with a 10.25-inch screen arrived for 2021. Exterior styling was mildly refreshed and all-wheel drive became standard for 2022.

The CX-5 was a new-from-the-ground-up model when it debuted for the 2013 model year. Initially, the sole engine was a 155-horsepower, 2.0-liter four-cylinder that could be paired with a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. This engine made the CX-5 rather poky, but for 2014, Mazda added an optional 184-hp, 2.5-liter four-cylinder that provided stronger acceleration. Mazda’s Smart City Brake Support low-speed collision mitigation system also became available for 2014. A 2016 refresh included exterior styling tweaks, updated cabin materials, a revised infotainment system, additional connectivity features and a retuned suspension.
