Expert 2000 Toyota 4Runner review

our expert's take
Our expert's take

Full article
our expert's take

Vehicle Overview
The 4Runner is the volume leader among Toyota’s three sport utility vehicles, outselling the RAV4 two to one and the Land Cruiser nearly seven to one. This year’s changes are limited to a handful of new standard features. All trims get the All-Weather Guard Package as standard, the base 4Runner adds a rear window wiper and defogger, and the Limited and SR5 gain daytime running lights and audio upgrades.

The 4Runner is priced higher than most rival compact SUVs, but Toyota’s well-earned reputation for quality and high resale value offer some compensation.

Interior
With a wide cargo floor, a rear seat that folds flat and the spare tire tucked underneath the vehicle, the 4Runner boasts nearly 80 cubic feet of cargo space. Space for five passengers comes from a pair of front buckets and a three-place bench. Leather seats are standard on the top-shelf Limited and optional on the sporty SR5, which also is available with optional cloth sport seats.

Exterior
The four-door body style has a one-piece liftgate with a standard power window that lowers into the tailgate. An option package for the SR5 imparts a more aggressive appearance with chrome wheel arch moldings, fog lights, 16-inch alloy wheels and a hood scoop.

Under the Hood
Base models come with a 150-horsepower, 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine; the others use a 3.4-liter V-6 that cranks it up to 183 horsepower. All three models are available with 2WD or 4WD, and two 4 x 4 systems are offered. On the base and SR5, it is a part-time 4WD system for use on slippery surfaces. On the pricier Limited, it is a full-time system that can be left engaged on dry pavement.

  • 4runner girl forever

My first 4runner was a 2000. Over 100k miles on it when I purchased it used in 2005 and I fell in love! In 2018 I traded it in for a used 2005 model. 150k miles on the speedometer - just broken in. My son totalled it 2 weeks ago. Guess what I'm looking for?: my third 4runner

  • Greatest disappointment of any automobile owned

I love the vehicle but the body is about to fall off of the severely rusted frame. For some reason this vehicle was not included in the frame recall and now my 2000 4 Runner is not longer safe to drive. JT3VN39W5R0141745. My 94 4Runner has over 250000 miles on it and the frame is better than the 2000.

  • classi 2 box

I've always loved this body style 4 runner. To date, it is still my favorite. I wanted the Land Cruiser that it was designed to look like (J80 body) but that thing was and still is a gas guzzler. The 4 runner is known as a go anywhere vehicle and it does just that. The 4WD is easy to use, The vehicle is easy to see out of , and just super reliable. It isn't as peppy as the competition for that time period but at least it will get you there

  • I've never owned a more reliable car

First, this model is very appealing, I think it's the best look. Second, it was cheap to keep. Even an engine overhaul was cheaper than a car payment. It's my daily driver as well as my camp vehicle and "let's run out to the lake for a night" vehicle. The interior has been super durable. Everything cleans up like new and for the driver seat to have only a small amount of wear after this many miles is a tribute to the maker. Plus, it's a manual, the most fun vehicle ever. Now that it's been overhauled, my mechanic says it's good for at least another hundred thousand. Its ac has always been cold, its power windows have always worked, it's been all around a great vehicle.

  • Great vehicle

This truck has been great to me. It hasn't let me down and is bulletproof. Yeah its 20 years old and has 300 thousand miles on it so it needs maintenance, but that was expected. Overall however, theres no other vehicle you could expect this kind of versatility and consistency from.

  • Most reliable vehicle I’ve ever owned!

Best money I’ve ever spent on a vehicle. I bought this vehicle in 2000. My 29 year old son drove it. Now my 18 year old daughter is driving it! Thanks for a well built vehicle that possesses a timeless exterior design!

  • The 4Runner is one of the most fun cars I've owned

If this truck were a little more roomer inside, there's no way it would be for sale. The 4Runner is a very reliable vehicle and a blast to drive.
