Expert 2013 Toyota Tundra review

Vehicle Overview

Toyota went for the jugular in the 2007 model year when it introduced the second-generation Tundra full-size pickup truck with a powerful 5.7-liter V-8 engine and six-speed automatic transmission. Today, the Tundra faces much stiffer competition from Chevrolet, Ram, GMC and Ford half-ton pickups, all of which have been updated or revised since 2007. Certain configurations of the Tundra can seat up to six people.

The Tundra comes in two- or four-wheel drive and in three cab styles: regular cab, Double Cab and CrewMax. The CrewMax is the largest cab in the half-ton segment since Chrysler discontinued the Mega Cab option for the Ram 1500. The CrewMax comes only with a 5-foot, 6-inch bed, while other versions can be ordered with either a 6.5-foot or an 8-foot cargo bed.
New for 2013
The TRD Rock Warrior Package is now available on the Limited trim, and buyers can now choose from three wheel designs available for the Chrome Appearance Package. Last year’s Platinum Package becomes the Platinum trim, and it includes 20-inch alloy wheels, heated and ventilated front bucket seats with embroidered head restraints, simulated wood interior trim, a chrome lower front bumper, and special badging.
Exterior
Toyota made sure this Tundra wouldn’t have sand kicked in its face by designing a big, brawny pickup that looks like it could bully any truck on the market — at least from the front. The massive grille, sculpted hood and husky bumper present an intimidating head-on view. From the side, the Tundra is rather conventional. A deck-rail adjustable tie-down system is optional for all cargo beds. Available TRD Off-Road packages include heavy-duty Bilstein shocks, front tow hooks, skid plates, badges and unique wheels. Exterior features include:

  • 17-, 18- or 20-inch wheels
  • Optional power-sliding rear window
  • Optional power moonroof

Interior
The Tundra’s interior is designed to accommodate working people. The control knobs are easy to grip, even with work gloves, and the gauges are easy to read at a glance but placed at the end of long barrels in the dash. There are plenty of storage options, especially with a center console that can hold a laptop and hanging files. Even the regular cab Tundra has enough room behind the seats to hold five-gallon paint buckets. The seats are wide, supportive and comfortable. Interior features include:

  • Standard dual-zone air conditioning
  • Two front 12-volt power outlets
  • Front bench or bucket seats
  • Optional leather upholstery
  • Optional navigation system with Entune multimedia system

Under the Hood
Mechanical features include:

  • 270-horsepower, 4.0-liter V-6 with aluminum block and cylinder heads, dual overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder, with 278 pounds-feet of torque
  • 310-hp, 4.6-liter V-8 with aluminum block and cylinder heads, dual overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder, with 327 pounds-feet of torque
  • 381-hp, 5.7-liter V-8 with aluminum block and cylinder heads, dual overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder, with 401 pounds-feet of torque
  • Five-speed automatic transmission (V-6)
  • Six-speed automatic (V-8s)
  • Four-wheel drive available on V-8 models

Safety
Trailer-sway control and brake override technology are standard. Trailer-sway control uses a truck’s stability control sensors to detect unintended side-to-side movement at the rear wheels while towing and uses the truck’s antilock braking system to counteract yaw caused by unwanted trailer motion. Other safety features include:

  • Antilock brakes
  • Electronic stability system
  • Side-impact airbags for the front seats
  • Side curtain airbags
  • Optional backup camera

  • I have a 2013 Toyota Tundra Limited Crewmax 5.

I have a 2013 Toyota Tundra Limited Crewmax 5.7L V8 FFV 4x4. My truck has all the bells and whistles that I need (4 wheel drive, leather seats, heated seats, towing package, duel climate control, TRD off-road package, moon roof, etc). But it is also a very expensive truck. I bought the truck in 2022 for $27,500. It had 119,000 miles on it at the time. The interior with the limited package is nice to me, and doesn’t look out of date. The exterior also looks good to me. This truck so far has been incredibly reliable. I have not had a single issue with the truck. I really believe that this truck will last 300,000 miles. The performance of the truck is great as well. The 5.7L V8 gives you 381 horsepower. That is plenty enough for me. But the truck is not perfect. The only issues for me are 1. Fuel Economy 2. Rough Ride 3. Parking. This truck is a gas guzzler! I have 35 inch mud tires on my truck. It averages about 10-11 mpg combined. The truck also rides very rough (the mud tires on my truck probably make it worse). The truck is hard to park due to its size as well. Overall I would give the truck 4 out of 5 stars. I’ve gotten used to the rough ride and parking, but the low fuel economy really eats away at my wallet. But this truck lasts much longer on average than other trucks. It also holds its value much better than other trucks (at 9 years old with 119,000 miles it was still worth $27,500). If you can get past the poor fuel economy, then I think that you will really enjoy this truck. And if you take care of it, it should last you at least 250,000 miles.

  • What More Can I Say, It’s a Toyota!

This Platinum has all the bells and whistles I would ever need or want. While not as fancy as one of the “other” trucks, I plan for this one to last well past the 300,000 mile mark!

  • Best truck ever - more miles the better

I've owned Tundra trucks for the past 10 years after many Ford, Chevy, Dodge and Nissan. Hands down this is the best truck. I've owned them with about 20k miles and with almost 200k miles and you can not tell a difference. This engine and transmission is just bullet proof and seems to run for ever. It's smooth and the 5.7L has close to 400 HP. reliability is just out of this world. Seems nothing ever go wrong with these. Very happy and A+ on the review.

  • Extremely Reliable!

It rides well and, with proper maintenance, will never let you down. Only reason for not getting 5 stars across the board is Toyota's lack of updates over the years. They are falling behind manufacturer's like RAM in the creature comforts area. However they still lead the pack in reliability!
