Vehicle Overview
Dodge’s full-size sport utility vehicle got a substantial redesign for the 2004 model year. Basic Durango styling cues continued, but the current model is 7 inches longer and more than 3 inches taller than its predecessor and features 15 percent more cargo capacity.

A new Adventurer model with heated cloth seats debuts for 2005. A full-screen navigation system and a new SXT option package are available. A V-6 and two Magnum V-8 engines are offered, topped by the famed 5.7-liter Hemi. Dodge also promises up to 8,950 pounds of towing capacity.

The Durango will likely be joined by a smaller SUV, the Nitro, in the next couple years.

Exterior
Dodge promotes the Durango’s “broad-shouldered presence,” starting with a familiar crosshair grille. Single headlight covers conceal dual lights. The SUV’s silhouette features short front and rear overhangs, a dramatically sloped windshield and what Dodge calls “powerful” wheel arches.

The Durango rides on a 119.2-inch wheelbase, measures 200.8 inches long overall and stands 74.3 inches tall. Standard 17-inch tires are mounted on steel, aluminum or chrome-plated wheels.

Interior
Durangos can hold seven people when equipped with three rows of seats. A five-passenger configuration is also offered. Cargo volume behind the third row is 19 cubic feet; that space grows to 102.4 cubic feet when both rear seats are folded down. Second-row occupants get reclining seats, and an optional DVD entertainment system is available. Reversible slush mats are included in the Adventurer model, which has a rubberized washable cargo liner with a built-in organizer.

Under the Hood
The standard engine in two-wheel-drive Durangos is a 210-horsepower, 3.7-liter V-6. A 4.7-liter V-8 that produces 230 hp and 290 pounds-feet of torque is optional. Durango buyers can also buy a 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 that cranks out 335 hp and 370 pounds-feet of torque.

A four-speed-automatic transmission mates with the V-6, and V-8 models work with a five-speed automatic. Durangos come with rear-wheel drive or full-time four-wheel drive, which has Low-range gearing.

Safety
All-disc antilock brakes include electronic brake-force distribution. Optional side curtain-type airbags protect all three rows of seats.

Driving Impressions
Steering is lighter than expected. The Durango has a comparatively soft suspension, which translates to an especially comfortable ride. This SUV can get a little woozy through repeated curves.

Handling is less than ideal, even on the expressway, as the Durango is a little too inclined to edge out of its lane. Suspensions differ among the three engine choices, but not dramatically.

Surprisingly, the new Durango doesn’t stand above the pack in acceleration. Response from the Hemi V-8 is less vigorous than expected. Automatic-transmission response is better with the V-6 engine, which is a little noisier when pushed. The 4.7-liter V-8 might be a good compromise, but flooring the gas too often results in delayed, modest acceleration.

Overall, the Durango’s performance stands tallest when it goes off-road. Thick A- and B-pillars obscure the view somewhat. Getting into and out of the Durango demands quite a climb, but running boards and grab handles help.

I bought the 05 Dodge Durango and was happy with my purchase. I liked the outside design but the interior was bland. If the seats were more comfortable, I would have tolerated the interior layout more. It had a nice storage bin behind the rear seat which was quite handy. It drives car like but the 3.7 six cylinder is thirsty. I've owned SUVs with eight cylinder that got better gas mileage! It was my first Dodge in a while and I was pleased. After 70,000 miles problems start to creep in. I traded it in shortly after my ac compressor locked. It was just too expensive to fix and my gut said it was time to move on. It earned its four stars but it's a fragile four stars

  • Great Work vehicle

This vehicle provides me the comfort I need to get back and forth to work everyday. Rides smooth and handles well for a S.U.V. The engine seems to manage acceleration/deacceleration well.

It’s very safe family vehicle, very comfortable, good speakers, very good handling in winter conditions . The body rusts especially by the gas cap area and wheel wells.

  • Surprisingly Good...

I bought the Limited version new in 2005 with every available option, and have to say that it's virtually been without fault from day one. I am considering selling it because I just picked up a 2011 Lexus 460, but have serious reservations about letting this vehicle go at current market prices. The same Lexus GX 460 from the same year would command almost 3 times the price of a fully outfitted Durango from that year. Granted, Lexus reliability is in a class of it's own, but this vehicle is "highly" underrated when standing against it's most common competitors. Compare any other US or European equivalent in terms of size (body on frame), towing ability, true 4 wheel drive capability, reliability, etc. and this vehicle is far closer to a Lexus than a Tahoe or Expedition when it comes to overall longevity and driving satisfaction. Yes, the Hemi is thirsty, but it provides effortless acceleration, and sounds just as strong as the day I bought it. Niggly little things like the driver's seat shroud, which can crack after a hundred-K, or the little plastic shield that covers where the seatbelt enters the seat frame can break over time - all things which don't quite make it a Lexus - but which are all very small repair details that can be fixed easily and inexpensively. On the whole, I see many of these vehicles being sold by original owners with 180 to 250k on them - that's saying something when most Mercedes or BMW full size SUV's of the same vintage are often on the market at half that mileage with 3 or more owners, and costing only slightly more (talk about depreciation). I think the Hemi Durango vehicle is by-and-large one of the best little unknown gems out there when it comes to a very reliable full sized body-on-frame SUV at an incredible price.

  • Love this model of Durango

Larger and better looking compared to the newest models. It has more than enough room for a family of six. The DVD player is an issue because it is radio frequency vs infrared and dodge no longer supplies the headphones.
