What Is the 2024 Ford Escape?

The Ford Escape is a five-seat compact SUV that competes in a crowded and competitive segment. Direct rivals are plentiful, including the Honda CR-V, Hyundai Tucson, Mazda CX-50, Nissan Rogue, Toyota RAV4 and more. A turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder that makes 180 horsepower is the base powertrain, while a 250-hp, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder is optional. Both are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The three-cylinder engine offers a choice of front- or all-wheel drive, while the four-cylinder comes standard with AWD.

The Escape can also be had in hybrid and plug-in hybrid form, the latter of which has 37 miles of electric driving range. Both use a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and a continuously variable automatic transmission. The regular hybrid has a total system output of 192 hp and can be had with FWD or AWD. The PHEV makes 210 total hp and comes only with FWD.

The Escape enters the 2024 model year largely unchanged. Ford did, however, drop the previous base trim, so the new entry-level model is the Active version.

Should I Buy the 2024 Ford Escape?

The Ford Escape remains fairly competitive thanks to its fuel efficiency, agility and the performance provided by its optional turbocharged four-cylinder. Even in its top trim levels, however, the Escape’s cabin looks and feels cheap compared with most rivals, and its cargo area is smaller than the class norm. In the plus column, the Escape comes with an impressive array of standard comfort features and driver aids — which explains in part why its base price is higher than many of its rivals.
