The Ford Explorer is a mainstay among three-row SUVs, delivering a combination of practicality and style that makes it appealing to families. For the 2025 model year, the Explorer received a mild freshening to help keep it competitive against formidable competitors, such as the Hyundai Palisade, Toyota Highlander and Volkswagen Atlas.

Related: 2025 Ford Explorer Review: Still Fun, Still Flawed

The update brings an all-new interior along with new tech, styling tweaks and a lineup of trim levels that’s been cut by half to simplify ordering and production. What hasn’t changed is that the Explorer remains surprisingly entertaining to drive for a family SUV, making everything from grocery runs to family vacations more fun. Unfortunately, however, it can’t match competitors for value.

Cars.com Detroit Bureau Chief Aaron Bragman spent some time checking out a new Explorer on the varied road conditions of southern Michigan, and he found the changes address some, but not all, of our gripes. Tap the link above for Bragman’s expert review, or for a quicker rundown, keep reading to learn four things we like about the 2025 Ford Explorer and three things we do not.

What Do We Like About the 2025 Ford Explorer?

1. Lively Powertrains

All Explorers except the ST performance trim come with a 300-horsepower, turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine good for 310 pounds-feet of torque. It’s paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission and either standard rear- or available all-wheel drive, and acceleration is lively and smooth. A twin-turbo 3.0-liter V-6 is standard with the ST and available with the Platinum; with 400 hp and 415 pounds-feet of torque, it’s enough to turn the Explorer into a street screamer and offers plenty of grunt accompanied by a throaty exhaust note.

2. Stealthily Sporty

The Explorer’s RWD chassis layout gives it a handling advantage over front-wheel-drive competitors. Combined with a choice of potent powertrains, that makes the Explorer surprisingly fun to drive for its size. The suspension is firm without being overly so, and the SUV’s steering offers nice heft and good feedback. A Sport mode quickens transmission and throttle responses for a more engaging driving experience.

3. Interior Improvements

A complete interior redesign addresses one of our biggest gripes with the Explorer, banishing its low-rent interior look and feel for much more appealing surroundings and higher-quality materials. Other updates include a simplified dash design with improved storage and a 13.2-inch horizontally oriented touchscreen, which we much prefer to the old vertically oriented screen. Ford has joined the Google-based infotainment system bandwagon, too, but it also retained wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

4. Simplified Selection

Ordering an Explorer got a lot less complicated for 2025, with a lineup of just four trims. The move is aimed at improving quality and bringing the Explorer more in line with its competitors. That leaves the new Active trim, the sporty looking ST-Line, the actually sporty ST and the top Platinum. Several option packages allow for additional customization, as well. For 2026, there will be a fifth trim joining the lineup: The off-road Tremor variant will be available for buyers looking to head into the woods.

More From Cars.com:

What Do We Dislike About the 2025 Ford Explorer?

1. Google It

While the switch from Ford’s own Sync infotainment system to the Google-based Digital Experience interface gives owners easy access to Google apps, it relies on an internet connection to function. That means you might not even have access to voice commands without a signal, let alone navigation and other functions. (Fortunately, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are still part of the package.)

2. Fewer Knobs

The new dash design retains physical controls for a few functions like audio volume, but it moves most other controls, such as climate functions, to the center touchscreen. Worse, some formerly quick adjustments now require more steps; it takes multiple taps just to switch from fresh to recirculated air, for example. The good news is Ford has at least avoided touch-sensitive steering-wheel controls in favor of physical switches.

3. Cramped in Back

Aside from the first row, the interior is largely unchanged, meaning the Explorer still comes up short on occupant and cargo space compared to that of some rivals. The third row lacks sufficient legroom for adults, and available second-row captain’s chairs are too narrow and lack support.

  • I purchased a 2025 Ford Explorer Platinum with the 3.

I purchased a 2025 Ford Explorer Platinum with the 3.0 liter 6 cyclinder. The car has lots of power and drives well. It has lots of acceleration and easily pulls a 5000 lb trailer. Things I like about the car: 1. Heated and cooled front massage seats. On a long drive the massage seats are fabulous! 2. Very good radio/sound system 3. Wireless Apple/Android connectivity 4. Lots of cargo space What I dislike: 1. Gas mileage between 19-22 mpg 2. Lane departure system annoying 3. Had a rattle noise in the front of the car at 9000 miles that the dealer could not find. At 11,000 miles, the rattle mysteriously went away. No idea what is going on here. 4. Sometimes when I open the rear hatch, the chime sounds loudly, The next time it does not sound at all. Wish I could just turn it off. ??

  • Driving experience is great.

Driving experience is great. Either engine is plenty of power but even the base 2.3l is very fast. Rear wheel drive bias is noticeable in driving dynamics making it fun to drive. The new Google based infotainment system one of the best in the industry in my opinion.. Almost don't even need a phone with how smart it is. Blue cruise is very convenient for long monotonous highway drives if equipped

  • I purchased the 2025 explorer platinum this is my 3rd

I purchased the 2025 explorer platinum this is my 3rd explorer platinum I ordered the car because I liked the ones that I have had and had very good luck with them with very little trouble and dealer was always very responsive and would get things fixed right away. Not the case this time. Ford did a refresh for 2025. while I like the interior refresh and exterior they deleated a lot of the equipment that made it a platinum. the stereo has been downgraded it says it’s the b&o 14 speaker but it does not compare to the b&o stereo in my 2021 that I traded. Ford has always been known for the keypad on Door I use it all the time they deleated that but I could still order it I did but it cost me 400 for the cost and installation. The new google based infotainment system is great when it works. If amine is familiar with the nightmare of windows ME this is a lot like it hangs up constantly have to do a hard reset. The fit and finish on the interior trim pieces are unfinished in many areas I definitely got a Friday built car. This is just the beginning. This is my 31 ford and my 12 new one. It will be my last Ford. The dealer in eagle river Wisconsin has completely ghosted me no response to emails phone call ect. So I am currently looking for a new dealer to use that will service new car. I would run the other way on the 2025 explorer platinum.

  • 2025 Ford Explorer ST Line meh.

2025 Ford Explorer ST Line meh. The mpg is abysmal 16mpg average give me a V6 in that case. The 2.3t is not bogged down fairly peppy under load and makes delightful angry turbo 4 noises steering is not the worst for e-pass. Interior isn't terrible but not great the cloth seats suck my lower back hurt the entire drive even on soft, this is a 2 ton SUV not a hatchback. Infotainment is annoying being there is no tune knob for the radio very distracting and the vinyl on the steering wheel feels cheap and slippery meh get ST or regular 2.3t Explorer.

  • This Explorer replaces a 2017 I loved.

This Explorer replaces a 2017 I loved. That car is still in the family. The Platinum Edition is fabulous, lots of bells and whistles. I choose to turn off the lane management system. It is somewhat aggravating. The automatic on off at stoplights can be irritating when you have a lot of stoplights. I will turn this feature off when I’m in traffic at a lot of lights. Otherwise, I keep it on. There is a great deal of new technology on the vehicle which is located on the center screen. It was not hard to learn, and although I’ve had this vehicle for a month I’m still learning a few things. This vehicle is a six seater with heated and ventilated seats. The back windows have screens, which is great when your transporting little children and anyone else the seats also have an automatic fold. This car will move quickly great pick up and even with a new car around town, I’m getting 20 1/half miles per gallon on regular gas. Although being a six seater, it is not too big. I had looked at a jeep which ran a good $13,000 more for the same features. The new body style on the Jeep was not appealing to a family member so we stuck with the Ford.

This is my third Explorer…and this time I chose the Platinum edition. The exterior is about the same but with some very tasteful updates to the rear taillights and front grill. The interior is dramatically improved with a variety of materials used throughout. The larger touchscreen is easy to use. This is the first Android based platform and it is easy to use and worked seamlessly with Apple CarPlay. The Blue Cruise auto-driving feature is very impressive- and once you get over the hesitation of letting the car steer itself is very useful especially on long interstate trips. All in all this is the best Explorer I’ve had.
