What Is the 2023 GMC Sierra 1500?

The 2023 GMC Sierra is a full-size pickup truck that shares a platform and powertrains with its sibling, the Chevrolet Silverado. The Sierra is available with a standard turbocharged four-cylinder, two optional V-8s or a torque-rich turbo-diesel inline-six. Rear-wheel drive is standard, but the Sierra can be outfitted with a variety of four-wheel-drive systems and a number of features to boost towing capacity or all-terrain prowess. The Sierra is a hardworking truck at heart, but it can be turned into a veritable luxury vehicle in its range-topping Denali trims — just be prepared for some sticker shock if you scale the heights of this truck’s option sheet.

What’s New on the 2023 GMC Sierra 1500?

The big news for the 2023 model year is the addition of an off-road-themed AT4X AEV Edition. This includes adventure-related hardware like a front winch, additional underbody skid plates, front and rear steel bumpers, and black 18-inch alloy wheels wrapped in chunky 33-inch all-terrain tires. GMC has also improved the horsepower and torque ratings of the optional Duramax turbo-diesel inline-six. Output for the diesel now comes in at 305 horsepower and 429 pounds-feet of torque.

What Features in the 2023 Sierra 1500 Are Most Important?

Standard features include:

  • 7-inch touchscreen
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • One USB port
  • Push-button start
  • Remote keyless entry
  • 17-inch steel wheels
  • Front bench seat, vinyl upholstery
  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Forward collision warning
  • Automatic high-beam headlights
  • Lane departure warning
  • Lane departure steering assist

Available features include:

  • Leather seating
  • 13.4-inch touchscreen
  • Power-operated running boards
  • Heated and ventilated front seats
  • Heated steering wheel
  • Heated rear seats
  • Bed-mounted 120-volt outlet
  • Bed-mounted stereo system
  • Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Wireless device charging
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Surround-view parking camera
  • Super Cruise self-driving aid

Should I Buy the 2023 GMC Sierra 1500?

The GMC Sierra has an impressive roster of powertrains and features that take the fight to key rivals, especially the hugely popular Ford F-150 and Ram 1500. While it’s more expensive than the Silverado, the Sierra is equipped with higher-quality cabin trim and additional features to help justify the price premium. If you’re new to the full-size pickup truck market, however, you might be in for a rude awakening when you see how high the asking price of a Sierra can go in its top-of-the-line Denali Ultimate trim.

  • I own a 2023 GMC Sierra Denali with the 6.

I own a 2023 GMC Sierra Denali with the 6.2 liter v8. The truck just turned 20k miles and my engine locked up. First GM had Active fuel Management, that was a problem causing engines to fail. Instead of doing away with the faulty system that deactivates cylinders while the truck is cruising, supposedly to get better gas mileage, they doubled down and came of with Dynamic Fuel Management, which deactivates even more cylinders at cruising speeds, causing even more V8 engines to blow at extremely low mileage. My truck has been at Al Piemonte Buick / GMC for almost two months now, waiting for an engine replacement, but guess what, this is happening to Chevy Silverados, Cadillac Escalades and of course GMC Sierras, so the engines are not so readily available! Making payments on a truck that I can’t even drive is very frustrating! My Sierra Denali is under factory warranty, so they say it will be covered, but when is my truck going to be repaired and returned to me! GM knows there is a major problem with both the 6.2 & the 5.3 liter V8’s cause of this DFM system, but they refuse to to do the right by their loyal customers and fix this flawed system. I have been buying GM vehicles since the 1980’s, this might be my last GM truck! Hope GM is listening to the multitude of complaints concerning these motors, the worst being 2019-2024 models. Very disappointing state of affairs!

  • Very disappointed customer

I bought my 2023 gmc sierra truck a couple months brand new/used. I started having problems with the brakes. Took it to the dealership and they said there was nothing wrong with my brakes. I’m still dealing with that annoying noise on my brakes. A month ago my front dash screen went blank. Now today a new truck I can t drive my truck out of my driveway! I had no oil and it sounds like my truck motor is going to blow up. I had a couple months took my truck in the dealership to get my oil changed!!!! Then no oil !

  • Like the truck but also disappointed

Got the duramax diesel and getting 24 city and 32 highway is very good. Truck drives nice and is very comfortable. My 2 issues with this truck is the backup camera at night is useless (very dark) and interior lighting is not very good. You would have thought a 78k truck would have footwell lights, but it doesn’t.

  • "THE" GMC Truck!

I have a 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali with the 3.0 Diesel engine. I have 20,000 miles on it at the time of writing this. Never owned a diesel before and now i don't think i will own another one without it. I LOVE the engine in this truck. Only complaint would be that it likes DEF fluid while towing so pick up some extra DEF before you head out to tow something. Put about 8K miles on it this summer without adding any DEF fluid. seems to use a little more in the winter or when towing. Very quiet for a deisel and the fuel economy is awesome. Driving 70 mph down the freeway this truck gets about 30mpg, Drive 55mph on regular highways and this truck gets almost 40mpg. All around driving for me is about 26mpg. I used to fill up twice a week with my gas motor and now only once a week. Wireless Apple Carplay works great and the voice texting and mapping is a big plus. I also have the new SuperCruise feature which is awesome. Get on the freeway and set the supercruise on and the truck drives itself until i get to my exit (about 28 miles from home to work). Bose stereo is out of this world and all the storage is great to. I have a swingout bed toolbox, aluminum roll up tonneau cover, Lighted black GMC front emblem, Gloss Black 22" wheels, All Black decals and my dual exhaust bezels are black as well. I rotate the tires and change the oil every 5,000 miles. Couldn't ask for a better truck. Might get the ultimate next time as that has the messaging seats which i kinda wish I had.

  • Comfortable Spacious Crazy Fuel Economy

I have bought ny first GM product ever. Bought my first truck in 1983. My truck is a 2023 Crew Cab 4x4 with the Duramax 3.0 engine, SLT with the X31 package. Comfortable seats with a commanding view of the road. Rear seat room is impressive. I get nearly 30 MPG on my commute to work, 25-26 overall. Minor gripes Google integration could be better. Wish CarPlay was full screen. More customization of the navigation screen would be better. Wish I could add more apps to the Google integration. Sirius, Fuelly, and Gas Buddy would be great.
