Overview
The 2026 Toyota Corolla is a five-seat compact car that’s available as a four-door sedan or four-door hatchback. The base engine is a 169-horsepower, 2.0-liter four-cylinder paired with a continuously variable automatic transmission and front-wheel drive. A hybrid powertrain is available exclusively on the sedan; it combines a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine with an electric motor, good for a total of 138 horsepower that drives the front wheels. AWD versions add a second motor for the rear wheels. A high-performance GR Corolla is also available, powered by a 300-hp, turbocharged 1.6-liter three-cylinder engine paired with a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission. AWD is standard on the GR.
What’s New for 2026
New standard features for the 2026 Corolla include blind spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert for all models, along with a standard digital instrument display. Lower trims come with a 7-inch display, while upper trims get a larger 12.3-inch display. An FX trim has been added to the hatchback lineup, but the FX sedan that launched last year has been dropped. The FX hatch adds assorted goodies for a more aggressive look, including a rear wing, white 18-inch wheels, sport seats with suede inserts, and unique trim. Production is limited to 1,600 units.
The GR Corolla loses its mid-grade Premium trim, but its structure has been stiffened for improved handling and steering feel. There’s also a new air intake that helps manage engine temperature.

The Toyota Corolla competes with vehicles such as the Honda Civic, Hyundai Elantra, Kia K4 and Nissan Sentra. With good fuel economy and a reputation for reliability, the Corolla is a practical and affordable choice for trouble-free driving. Even base Corolla trims are well equipped with lots of standard safety and convenience features. Downsides include a less engaging driving experience than you’ll find in rivals like the Civic and Mazda3. Several rivals also have nicer interiors than the Corolla’s. The Corolla Hybrid and its available AWD add to this Toyota’s appeal and capability. It’s an affordable rival of the Honda Civic hybrid and Hyundai Elantra Hybrid.
The GR Corolla is aimed at hot-rod compacts like the Honda Civic Type R, Hyundai Elantra N, Subaru WRX and Volkswagen Golf R. Though the GR’s starting price is notably higher than the Elantra N’s or WRX’s, it’s a solid contender against any of the rivals listed above.

Conventional and hybrid powertrains are available, as are FWD and AWD and sedan and hatchback body styles. Fuel economy is another strong suit, with most hybrid models earning EPA ratings of more than 50 mpg in city driving. The Corolla’s variety of trims range from basic to well equipped, leaving lots of room for customization. Some compact-car alternatives are more fun to drive and have roomier cabins, but if you can live with those shortcomings, a Corolla is likely to be an excellent choice for long-term ownership.
