2022 Toyota Tacoma review: Our expert's take

What Is the 2022 Toyota Tacoma?

The Tacoma is a mid-size pickup truck that offers a choice of two cabs and can seat up to five. A 159-horsepower, 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine is standard, while a 278-hp, 3.5-liter V-6 is available. A six-speed automatic transmission is standard, and the V-6 can have an optional six-speed manual. Rear- and four-wheel-drive configurations are available, and Tacoma rivals include the Chevrolet Colorado, Ford Ranger and Nissan Frontier

What’s New on the 2022 Toyota Tacoma?

The Trail Edition gets a lifted suspension, 16-inch bronze wheels with Goodyear tires, a unique grille and additional cargo box storage. The TRD Pro, meanwhile, gets an even greater suspension lift, forged-aluminum upper control arms and new wheels.

What Features in the 2022 Toyota Tacoma Are Most Important?

Standard features include:

  • 16-inch steel wheels
  • Air conditioning
  • Fabric-trimmed seats
  • 7-inch touchscreen multimedia system
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity
  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Lane departure warning
  • Automatic high-beam headlights

Available features include:

  • 16-, 17- or 18-inch alloy wheels
  • LED headlights
  • Power moonroof
  • Power-sliding rear window

Should I Buy the 2022 Toyota Tacoma?

The Tacoma’s base four-cylinder engine helps keep the price low, but the V-6 delivers better performance without a significant gas mileage penalty. However, the truck’s limited headroom and small backseat are downsides.

Dissappointed

I have a brand new 2023 Tacoma that is just under a year old. Here are my observations: 1) The transmission is pitiful at best. The lag time after stepping on the gas peddle is, in my opinion, a potential safety concern. When making a left turn, for example during heavy traffic, you can't count on the transmission to engage as you'd like to make your turn safely. 2) The center console is extremely awkward to get into because it's hinged in the wrong location. You need to be a contortionist to get into it. 3) The auto temperature control has a mind of it's own. The combination leg and defrost setting changes by itself and you're surprised when you begin to fog up. 4) The truck is extremely difficult to get into. I'm 5'10" tall and my head bands on the upper portion of the door entry point. Very annoying. All in all, the designers and engineers should be fired immediately. Does Toyota not test their designs before putting it into production? Japanese people are typically much shorter but they are selling their vehicles around the world and most people are not as short as they are. Where's the foresight and testing before production? I had a 2009 Tacoma and I would gladly have that truck back instead of my 2023.

Love my Taco!

Love this truck's features and look! Only criticism is leg room in backseat! Other than that, it is a great truck that will hold its value and build equity well! 9.5/10

Happy Camper

Was looking for a mid-size truck to replace a big Chevy Silverado 1500 Z71 and a small 90's model Chevy S-10 pickup. Was interested in the new gen Nissan Frontier but went with the Tacoma. My first ever Tacoma truck. A 2022 SR with the V-6 motor and SX package. Purchased it used with about 9,000 miles on it. Overall I really like the size and style of the vehicle. The previous owner put a leveling kit and wheel spaces on it. As well as 285 AT tires. It has that go anywhere look. And while it has the power, the tranny is lackluster. And it rides like a truck which is good and bad. I've had a lot of compliments on it so it's obvious there are a lot of Taco fans out there. I got it at a fair deal and you just can't beat the reliability factor. Probably won't be my last Tacoma because this one meets or exceeds most all my expectations. Happy camper here!
