jeep grand cherokee 4xe 30th Anniversary 2023 Jeep Wrangler Willys 4xe oem exterior 01 2 jpg

The Grand Cherokee 4xe and Wrangler 4xe were the first Jeep models to usher in the brand’s electrified future, but the plug-in hybrids now are going back in time with a pair of retro-inspired variants debuting at the 2022 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The 2023 Grand Cherokee 4xe 30th Anniversary will be available for a limited time with unique exterior appointments and more standard safety features, while the 2023 Wrangler Willys 4xe becomes the new base model for the off-road-oriented hybrid, bringing a lower price of admission.

Grand Cherokee 4xe 30th Anniversary

To commemorate the Grand Cherokee’s three decades of history, the Grand Cherokee 4xe 30th Anniversary comes with blackened exterior accents and a unique front end. It also gets blue tow hooks, new 20-inch black wheels, 30th Anniversary badging and a body-colored rear, lower moldings and wheel flares. Inside, the special edition gets black leather seats, ventilated front seats, and additional tech and safety features including front and rear park assist, automatic emergency braking, a digital rearview mirror and a 360-degree camera system. A standard 10.1-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, built-in navigation and a nine-speaker Alpine audio system are also included.

The SUV’s hybrid powertrain carries over from the 2022 model and combines a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, two electric motors and a 400-volt, 17-kilowatt-hour battery pack for a total of 375 horsepower and 470 pounds-feet of torque. It gets an EPA-rated 56 mpg-equivalent and 25 miles of all-electric range, and it can tow up to 6,000 pounds.

Wrangler Willys 4xe

While the Grand Cherokee 4xe marks the model’s big 3-0, the 2023 Wrangler Willys 4xe throws it back further to its namesake’s roots in the 1940s. The Willys 4xe falls below the Sahara 4xe as the most affordable plug-in Wrangler; it can be identified with a Willys decal on the hood and “Electric 4-Wheel Drive” decal on the swing gate. Other standard features include LED headlights and foglights, an Alpine nine-speaker audio system, all-weather floormats, a rear limited-slip differential, rock rails, a black grille and 17-inch black-painted alloy wheels.

The current Wrangler 4xe’s base Sahara trim comes standard with the latest Uconnect 4C multimedia system featuring built-in navigation and an 8.4-inch touchscreen; these features will be optional on the new Willys 4xe. The base model will likely share the gas-powered Wrangler Willys’ 7-inch touchscreen and Uconnect 4 with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

The Willys 4xe gets the standard hybrid setup, a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four-cylinder engine, two electric motors and a 400-volt battery pack for a system total of 375 hp and 470 pounds feet of torque. It gets an EPA-rated 49 mpg-e and 21 miles of all-electric range. The Wrangler 4xe offers three modes as part of its standard E Selec system: Hybrid, Electric and eSave. The latter saves battery charge for later use or employs the gas engine to recharge the battery.

Pricing and Release Date

The 2023 Grand Cherokee 4xe 30th Anniversary will add $4,700 to the 2023 Grand Cherokee 4xe’s price tag, which has not yet been announced. According to Jeep, orders will open later in 2022, and the model will arrive by early 2023. Currently, the 2022 Grand Cherokee 4xe’s base model starts at $57,660 (all prices include destination).

Jeep is now taking orders for the 2023 Wrangler Willys 4xe, which is expected to arrive late in 2022 with a starting price of $55,590. Previously, the Sahara 4xe was the most affordable variant with a $56,360 starting price, followed by the Rubicon at $60,190 and the range-topping High Altitude at $62,135.

  • Approaching 25,000 miles and we haven’t had any issues.

Approaching 25,000 miles and we haven’t had any issues. I actually enjoy choosing whether to run on electric or gas based on what my journey is. If you just put it in hybrid mode, you’re not utilizing the efficiency of the engine. My advice, think about your journey. If I’m jumping on the highway to then head into the city, I run it on gas on the highway then switch to all electric in the city -no point wasting the electric with highway driving! Then I use up the last of my electric when google tells me I’m X miles from home when I still have X miles of electric remaining to use it all up. When we just do local drives less than 25 miles (grocery, day care pick up etc.) we can literally run off electric only for days, even weeks. It just takes thinking about what your journey involves. Crawling traffic for a 5 mile slow down ahead, I’m on gas until I hit that traffic, then switch to electric. We’ve taken this Jeep (Willys) through plenty of winter storms with feet of snow and ice, never needed to use chains with its AWD or 4WD to choose from. Hopefully the great reliability continues.

  • Must have a body shop work on the vehicle,

The Jeep dealerships don't do body work on the vehicles. It has to be farmed out to a body shop....and this is across the board, not just this state.

  • You need to take one for a test drive!

I'm not a fan of the hybrid/electric car movement, but if I have to own one these really are impressive! Drives better, is more comfortable, better economy, and has better performance than a regular Wrangler!

  • AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE

Lithia Motors/Seminole County CDJR: Is there ANYTHING LESS THAN 1 STAR AVAILABLE?!?!?! Now to get to the service side. "Yeah you want the VERY IN-DEPTH Used Car Inspection. It's $450.00 dollars and they look at everything!" He dismissed me and kept talking to the trainee. Finally he came back and I agreed. No time frame for diagnosis given. Two days later I received the call from Nicholas. "Yes sir, they are done. All checked out green. All clear. Come pick it up!"Great, I thought. Drove up, picked it up. Paid the $500. Drove home happy. I had been smart to have PROFESSIONALS check it out!Got up the very next day to drive to work in Orange City. CHECK ENGINE light comes on I-4. xxx!!! I text Nicholas to get it back in. Drive straight there from work. Nicholas checks codes. Talks to mechanic. Says it appears to be a NEW gas vapor loss/leak. "Probably very safe to drive!" "NO" I said. "NOT going to drive vehicle with CHECK ENGINE light on. Keep it and find the problem" Get the shuttle. No time frame for diagnosis given.2 day later Nicholas calls. "Someone in the past did some homemade welding repair to GAS TANK, so you need a new one! THERE IS NO WAY THAT THE SUPER IN-DEPTH USED CAR INSPECTION COULD HAVE EVER FOUND THIS ISSUE!" So, I said "So it was just pure coincidence that the check engine light came on the first time I drive it after you all were tinkering around?" NO ANSWER. So several days, five I think, to get the tank and get it installed and flush all the fluids, change oil, rotate tires. I came back in. Pay the $2000 dollars and drive away. MUCH LESS happy this time.Drive the car back to house. It basically sits in my drive for four days. Drive it to work the day after that and on the way home, suddenly, screeching, whining, warning lights blowing up display, vehicle sputter and dying and I barely coast off road into a parking lot. IN THE MIDDLE OF NO WHERE. Hop ride with tow truck to dealership.Once again pure coincidence that basically the very first time I drive it after leaving your shop that the alternator and serpentine belt flat out die. Texted Nicholas to let him know. Again, of course, the reply came back "NO WAY THE SUPER UBER IN-DEPTH USED CAR INSPECTION COULOD HAVE EVER FOUND OUT YOU HAD A REALLY BAD ALTERNATOR AND SERPENTINE BELT!!!"Waited thirty minutes at dealership to be greeted...So, I agree to have the service done, and ask for shuttle. Told by man at desk there that shuttle is out but should be back soon. Go and sit down for an hour. Come back no one at desk. All service personnel busy. Asked one, no idea. I have to call Uber and go home. MAD.Later that day get ESTIMATE from Nicholas. In addition to ANOTHER $176 diagnostic fee, $1300 for serp belt and alternator. I had already started doing research on costs in the area and the AVG cost for that work was between $700-900 max. Even figuring in NEW v REMANUFACTURED alternators the cost was still $300-400 HIGHER. Called Nicholas with my findings after calling almost every single other Jeep dealership in ORLANDO area to verify with him why your costs were 35-50% more. No answer besides "They must not be paying their mechanics the $250 hr. that we pay ours."Sorry, but unacceptable.I finally agreed to service, but as I said, this WILL be the last time my shadow crosses your building door thresholds. Absolutely HORRIFIC experience. My belief is that for the initial USED CAR INSPECTION, they pushed the Jeep into the bay and went to lunch then charged me $500 to put 100 checks into boxes, otherwise a COMPETENT mechanic WOULD have found issues. NO COINCIDENCE that suddenly everything is breaking once you all get your hands on the Jeep. All signs point to a systemic RIP OFF.
