All the cars I looked at reeked
August 10, 2018
A family member bought a vehicle from CarMax, and described it as a good, hassle-free experience, so I thought I'd give it a try.
I drove to Merriam from Lees Summit to look at a specific luxury sedan. When I opened the door, I literally gagged. It *reeked*, like cigarette smoke and pickles.
I tried to open the doors and air it out for a few minutes, but it didn't help, I couldn't even get close to it. It was a beautiful car otherwise, and a good price, but there's no way I would put my kids in it, they would show up to school smelling like pickled cigarette butts.
Instead of wasting the trip, I decided to check out some other vehicles that might interest me. Over half (probably 2/3) of their inventory reeks, usually smoker smell, but some smelled like fast food or mold.
I left without even test driving anything. When I got home my clothes smelled.
Despite the bad experience, I actually would still consider buying a vehicle from CarMax, because I found the online inventory search very convenient, I like their pricing model, and actually the staff there were pleasant (except they were nose deaf). But they really need some way to label which cars are smokers cars, like a cigarette symbol next to the listing, to save everyone wasted time and expense. I couldn't imagine having a car shipped from another state, only to find that it reeks.
