| Cars.com says: With two new V-8 engines, an improved base engine, more standard tech and a robust lineup, there’s a 2027 Silverado 1500 for every taste. |

The new 2027 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is big both dimensionally and in importance; nothing under the Big Three’s model umbrella sells better than their light-duty pickup trucks, with GM’s Chevrolet and GMC brands moving a combined 593,000-plus light-duty pickups in 2025.
Regardless of brand, a next-gen American truck is always one of the most important and anticipated product releases of the year. With Chevrolet’s new 2027 Silverado 1500, the biggest news is the biggest engine: A new 6.6-liter V-8 replaces the longstanding 6.2-liter V-8 as the top dog for power and displacement bragging rights — but not for towing capacity. The 2027 Silverado’s impressive 13,700-pound maximum tow rating is achievable only with the also-new 5.7-liter V-8, the upper-mid-grade engine that replaces the 5.3-liter. Wanna tow the moon? Go mid or go home.

Generally, the rest of the redesign is far more subtle than the headline engines suggest. A freshened interior with a massive (and standard) 16.3-inch touchscreen infotainment display contrasts with a lightly massaged exterior, with reworked headlights and lighting accents serving as the most significant exterior updates. Hey, more than a half a million moved in 2025 proves a radical redesign wasn’t necessary.

What Do We Like About the 2027 Chevrolet Silverado 1500?
1. Engine excellence: Of the four engines available, I had hands-on experience with the fresh 6.6-liter V-8 and the returning Duramax turbo-diesel 3.0-liter inline-six. While the Duramax is absolutely one of the smoothest and quietest hearts available for any light-duty truck, the new 6.6-liter V-8 is one of the meatiest. Well, against the other naturally aspirated competition, it’s the meatiest, with 481 horsepower and 501 pounds-feet of torque.
Though the no-brainer pick to Rat Finks like me, it occupies an interesting role in the lineup; since max towing capacity is available only with the 5.7-liter, it seems the 6.6-liter is the pick for both vanity and/or enthusiasts. That’s certainly how it’s tuned, with both character and soundtrack that’s more muscle than mule.
Power, of course, is excellent. I still think GM’s a bit lame for not slipping the Cadillac Escalade V’s 682-hp, supercharged 6.2-liter V-8 into at least the hardcore ZR2, but a 6.6 Silverado merges, passes, shouts and scoots well beyond anyone’s daily needs. My luxe High Country test truck sounded particularly fierce with the active exhaust, with Sport mode wedging the valves in the system open for a thunderous roar that surely shook the spines off nearby cacti.
2. Impressive standard screens: Regardless of trim, each 2027 Silverado 1500 arrives with a 16.3-inch center infotainment touchscreen, up a whopping 9.3 inches over the prior standard 7-inch touchscreen and 2.9 inches over the last-gen truck’s available 13.4-inch screen. The 2027 Silverado also has a standard 12.2-inch digital driver’s display. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, but the same cannot be said for the 11.5-inch passenger display, which goes in High Country and ZR2 trims.
3. Primo interior: Some top-of-the-line pickup trucks have long rivaled luxury vehicles for both features and appointments, so it’s no surprise the luxe High Country trim is a proper Cowboy Cadillac. The front seats are heated and ventilated with an available massage function, the panoramic moonroof is a Silverado first, the wood trim is real, and the eight-speaker sound system is from Bose. Curiously, real leather isn’t available on any trim, though the High Country’s synthetic EvoTex upholstery cuts a fine impression of cowhide.
4. Physical controls and clever center console: Usually, excessive digital real estate means most of the physical controls have gone the way of the dodo, but not so in the Silverado. The center of the dash is covered in all of the necessary buttons and knobs for climate and entertainment along with repositioned controls for four-wheel drive, as the prior small cluster of buttons is now a line of controls on the center console.
5. Impressive off-road capability: It might not have the planetary power of the Ford F-150 Raptor R or the Ram 1500 TRX SRT, but the 2027 Silverado ZR2 is just as capable in the slower, more technical stuff as any light-duty rock cruncher. Out in the wilds of Arizona’s Sonoran Desert, I paced the ZR2 through a treacherous stretch of cragged rock ravine, a perfect showcase for Multimatic’s unbelievable Dynamic Suspension Spool Valve shocks that have become a hallmark of the ZR2 nameplate.
This suspension is equally at home at speed and at a crawl, so indicated by the ZR2’s impressive body composure during low-speed rock climbs and the new Baja drive mode tuned for high-speed desert blasts. Regardless of your preferred terrain, the ZR2 is ready with front and rear electronic-locking differentials, 35-inch tires, three dedicated off-road modes, and a comprehensive trail camera setup with a wash system and 19 distinct camera views.

What Do We Dislike About the 2027 Chevrolet Silverado 1500?
1. Is this really a next-gen truck? Aside from the engines and moderately tweaked cabin, both exterior and general packaging differences are subtle at best. Chevrolet engineers on hand at the media drive claimed everything under the sheet metal is all-new — and I have no real reason to doubt that — but those pleased with their last-gen Silverado might not find this compelling enough for an immediate upgrade (aside from that 6.6-liter, of course).
2. Piano-black plastic pains: Even in the luxe High Country and pricey ZR2, the use of gloss-black plastic was notable given the trim positioning. By the time I handed the keys over, the black trim was smudged and gross in the High Country and visibly scuffed in the dusty ZR2. If I could eradicate piano-black trim from the automotive industry, I wouldn’t hesitate for a second — especially given the intriguing and clever smudge-resistant textured trim seen from other automakers.
3. It’s no match for a Raptor R or TRX. C’mon, Chevy! The Cadillac Escalade V’s 682-hp, supercharged V-8 is right there! Ford and Ram enjoy robust sales of their six-figure supertrucks while the ZR2 scrums only with the Ram 1500 RHO and standard Ford F-150 Raptor. Though the ZR2 is tremendously capable and well equipped, I wish GM offered a loud-and-proud Vette-engined ZR2X to match its ultra-aggro vibe.
What Engines Are Available on the 2027 Chevrolet Silverado 1500?
Depending on trim, there’s a choice of four (very) distinct engines, starting with the returning base TurboMax 2.7-liter four-cylinder. Its very impressive 350 hp and 455 pounds-feet of torque is a gain of 40 hp and 25 pounds-feet, now managed by a 10-speed automatic transmission that’s standard regardless of engine. GM’s Silverado/Sierra twins are still the only light-duty trucks offering a diesel powertrain, with the returning Duramax turbo-diesel 3.0-liter inline-six’s 305 hp and 495 pounds-feet of torque unchanged from the prior generation.
The 5.7-liter and 6.6-liter V-8s are your power picks. The 5.7-liter’s iconic 350-cubic-inch displacement is the only thing “classic” about it, packing a robust 402 hp and 428 pounds-feet against the 6.6-liter’s 481 hp and 501 pounds-feet.
How Much Can the 2027 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Tow?
In its most capable configuration, the 2027 Chevrolet Silverado is rated up to a very healthy 13,700 pounds. Surprisingly, this is done not by the top 6.6-liter V-8 but by the 5.7-liter with the Max Trailering Package.
| Engine | Max Towing (Pounds) | Configuration |
| TurboMax 2.7-liter four-cylinder | 9,400 | Regular cab, long bed, two-wheel drive |
| 3.0L Duramax turbo-diesel 3.0-liter six-cylinder | 12,000 | Crew cab, short bed, 4WD, Max Trailering Package |

2027 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Vs. the Competition
In the market for a light-duty full-size truck? You’re spoiled for choice for 2027, with all but the Toyota Tundra offering a wide range of powertrains, configurations, capabilities and trims. The 2027 Silverado builds on an already robust trim portfolio for the new generation and should prove competitive as ever going into the new model year.
