2022 Jeep Wrangler review: Our expert's take

What Is the 2022 Jeep Wrangler?

The Wrangler is Jeep’s long-serving 4×4. It’s available as a two- or four-door SUV, the latter known as the Wrangler Unlimited. The two-door model has room for four people, while the Unlimited version seats five.

A standard 285-horsepower, 3.6-liter V-6 engine works with a six-speed manual transmission or an eight-speed automatic. Other available engines include a 270-hp, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder; a 260-hp, turbo-diesel 3.0-liter V-6 and a 470-hp, 6.4-liter V-8. The Wrangler Unlimited 4xe has a plug-in hybrid drivetrain that lets the SUV travel up to 21 miles on electric power alone, according to EPA estimates.

Four-wheel drive is standard, and the Rubicon trim level features upgraded mechanicals for serious off-roading. Wrangler competitors include the Ford Bronco, Toyota 4Runner and Land Rover Defender. The Wrangler Unlimited offers 18.2 cubic feet of cargo space behind its backseat, according to Cars.com’s cargo measurements.

What’s New on the 2022 Jeep Wrangler?

A 4.88:1 axle ratio is optional for Rubicon models with the gas V-6, and Jeep says the cabin air filter can remove 95% of particulates. The Sahara 4xe adds blue tow hooks.

What Features in the 2022 Jeep Wrangler Are Most Important?

Standard features include:

  • Folding soft top
  • Push-button start
  • Cloth seats
  • Tilt/telescoping steering wheel
  • Cruise control

Available features include:

  • Power locks, windows and mirrors
  • LED headlights
  • Three-piece hard top
  • Remote start
  • Air conditioning
  • Leather-trimmed seats
  • Heated front seats
  • Heated steering wheel
  • Alpine premium stereo
  • 7- or 8.4-inch touchscreen multimedia system
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity
  • Blind spot warning
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Automatic emergency braking

Should I Buy the 2022 Jeep Wrangler?

The Wrangler is a back-to-basics SUV, but that doesn’t mean it comes cheaply. The base two-door model lacks creature comforts like power windows, air conditioning and power locks, but it still starts around $31,000. The more practical Wrangler Unlimited is even pricier. For your money, you get a rugged 4×4 that’s fun to drive, has an iconic look and is extremely capable off-road. Better still, the latest Wrangler is better-behaved than its predecessor on paved surfaces.

Visibility and size are what I need. 4WD, clearance for snow. Rather tight interior, not suitable for more than two. Auto Park is very confusing. Not auto parallel Park. Car will stop while backing out of parking space, won't move if a somewhat complex procedure is not followed.

Really great car

Just purchased the Wrangler JL with the 2.0 turbo engine. Very comfortable car with lots of new safety features. We got the one touch slide roof. It feels like we have a convertible but we can close it in 10 seconds which is a great feature in FL with our famous pop up showers and thunderstorms.

Blue wrangler unlimited 2022

Got a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited in Blue and love it! Came with soft top but got hard top also for winter. I feel comfortable driving with no blind spots. And it drives great! Would recommend!
