Nick Bernicat (our sales person) was so incredibly patient, understanding, respectful, personable, and professional, and he made our car buying experience so much easier and less stressful than it had been until we met him. He was truly a pleasure to work with. We had been to other car dealerships and had encountered the classic aggressively pushy tactics car salesmen are known for, and Nick was anything but that. He intentionally cut out time for us to talk alone and never made us feel pressure to buy. He helped resolve all of our concerns and was open and honest throughout the entire process. After telling him about our previous experiences, he assured us that he wasn't there to push us and that it was okay if we didn't decide to buy. He said his focus was to build a good relationship with us so that even if the dealership didn't have what we were looking for, we would still be comfortable coming back when we were ready to buy years down the road. We'll be back on the market again in a year or so to get a second car, and if this dealership has the right car for us, we're definitely willing to drive the two hours back to buy from him again. His focus on human connection made working with him enjoyable, which is saying something because we had been dreading going into another dealership. Our financing experience was much more mediocre. It was 8pm by the time we got to the finance guy and he wanted to go home. He was dismissive, and while he would answer direct questions, he didn't have much interest in slowing down to explain anything we asked about. I felt kinda trampled and didn't really enjoy any of the interactions with him, but I'd still go back to work with Nick.

I started by emailing with Alex 'Mongo' at the beginning of November about a car I was interested in. When that one sold, he quickly recommended another hybrid that fit my budget perfectly. When I asked to put the car on hold to think about it, there was zero pressure - they were completely understanding when we left to look at other options. Mongo was extremely responsive over text, answering all my questions without being pushy at all. He was kind, level-headed, and genuinely easy to talk to. When we returned the next day ready to purchase, Chas got everything ready for us and made the paperwork process incredibly smooth. He even recommended a great place for tints! Mohammed in finance was fantastic as well. He worked with us to arrange monthly payments within our budget and was very transparent about all fees and add-ons. He showed us the breakdown of everything step by step. Even though we didn't go with the VIP package, he included an unlimited tire warranty without increasing our monthly payment, which was amazing. The entire process took about an hour and a half - we arrived around 12:30-1:00 and left by 2:30 with our new car! They also handled our registration seamlessly (we're DC residents but the dealership is in Virginia), provided a temporary tag, and made sure we knew exactly what to do for vehicle inspection. Everyone listened to our concerns, answered all our questions, and made sure everything was perfect with the car. This is hands down one of the best dealership experiences I've ever had. If you're looking for a car, ask for Mongo (Alex) and Chas - they're the absolute best! Five stars all around!

This was the first time that I've used CarMax... always felt that the "no-haggle" thing was just a grift. It's not. Very fairly priced car in pristine condition. They even transferred it for free. Transaction was relatively quick and painless as well. They were even able to take care of the REAL tags and title there as well. If you do your pricing research, they are most definitely an option. And thankfully there was no sleazy salesman vibe or upwelling. Would gladly use them again. Oh, and they actually FILLED the tank, which USED TO BE commonplace, and I didn't have to ask.
2023 Subaru Ascent review
This is my second Subaru Ascent. My first was the 2019, and when it came time that my son needed a car, we decided to pass that one on to him since I drive a lot and it had almost 100,000 miles on it. We went out and test drove other SUV's, and after doing so, decided on getting another Subaru Ascent because of how much I enjoyed the first one. The 2019 recall kinks seem to have been worked out in the 2023 model. What I can say about even the 2019 though is that the manufacturer stood behind the items that needed to be fixed, even replacing my whole transmission when the recall patch did not work correctly. We are now a Subaru family.

What criteria do you have in shopping your next used vehicle? 1. You want to buy a used car that is believed to be absolutely trouble free (Equivalent to a certified grade). 2. You are ok to buy a car at a fair market price (You are not trying to find a steal deal or to negotiate a price). 3. You hate sales pitch. Then go to Carmax. This is my best advice based on my past car buying experiences with all sorts of car dealers. You can't go wrong with Carmax if the above three are your criteria. Carmax set an extremely high standard in their car reconditioning protocols. Carmax certification is as good as manufacturer's certifications. Meanwhile, you will be discouraged if you come to Carmax in hope to find a steal deal, because all of their cars are priced RIGHT, and they never give you a room to negotiate over the price. This means that they don't play games, and they don't let you play games, either. They are fair. You have to be fair, too. A good news is, they don't try to steal your money. So don't try to steal theirs. However, I have one serious advice: Get pre-approved by a local credit union before coming to Carmax. While Carmax too does offer financing, their repayment rule has a catch. Say your monthly payment was set to $100. If you put $500 at once, you expect that the extra $400 would automatically go to principal payment, right? Not with Carmax financing. Instead, the first $300 goes to the three upcoming monthly payments, and only the remaining $200 will go to principal payment. If you intend to pay off your auto loan quick, this repayment rule that they set up is a deal breaker. A good thing is, they will gladly let you use your credit union financing; they won't pressure you into choosing their financing service. Good luck, and never go back to liars that live in the rest of the world.
2023 Subaru Ascent review
The safety feature saved us before we had 100 miles on the car. A van ran a stop a sign and the automatic braking stopped us 6-12" from being broadsided. Van was going 30 - 35MPH so it was great that we were saved by that.
