Expert 2000 Ford Expedition review

our expert's take
Our expert's take
By Cars.com editors
Full article
our expert's take

Vehicle Overview
Ford’s full-size sport utility vehicle debuted as a 1997 model and is built off the F-Series pickup chassis. The Lincoln Navigator is the Expedition’s luxurious corporate twin and offers a more powerful engine, standard leather upholstery and some convenience features not offered on the Expedition.

Interior
The 1999 Expedition and Navigator were the first production vehicles available with power-adjustable pedals, a feature that allows moving the pedals over a three-inch range to accommodate shorter drivers. For 2000, the adjustable pedals are standard instead of optional.

Seats for six are standard on the XLT model. New this year are optional captain’s chairs for the middle row, replacing a split-bench seat. Dual front captain’s chairs are standard on the Eddie Bauer model and optional on the XLT. The Eddie Bauer version also comes with a removable three-place rear bench for nine-passenger capacity, a feature optional on the XLT.

Exterior
Available only in four-door styling, the Expedition has a rear liftgate with a window that opens separately. Though the Expedition has a different grille and front-end trim, it shares major styling cues with the F-Series pickup.

Under the Hood
Two engines are available. A 215-horsepower, 4.6-liter V-8 is standard on all models except the 4WD Eddie Bauer, which comes with a 260-horsepower, 5.4-liter V-8. The latter is optional on other models. Two-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive models are available. The 4WD system engages automatically and can be used on smooth, dry pavement.

Safety
Side-impact airbags for the front seats will be offered as an option later in the model year. Also coming later in the year is the Reverse-Sensing System, which detects objects while the vehicle is backing up. The system, also used in the Ford Windstar minivan, alerts drivers that objects behind the vehicle are within 5.9 feet with warning beeps. As objects become closer, the beeps sound more frequently and become a continuous tone when the object is within 10 inches.

  • Can't beat it!

Original owner, with 327,2480 miles. Would buy a new one, but the old interior is nicer and the windows aren't shrunk down so small. I'll drive this car until I cannot drive any longer. The Triton V8 is the best engine ever, drives great in snow, just a reliable, comfortable, great SUV. We've been everywhere in this car. The outside design looks better than the newer ones, too.

  • Great SUV

I have had this vehicle since 2000. It has over 200000 miles on it. It is the best vehicle I have had and I have had 21 vehicles throughout my life. Nothing other than normal wear parts needed replacing.

  • Most reliable,spacious vehicle I've owned.

I like this truck so much I am wanting a newer one. Hope a newer one will be as good as this one has been to me. I used to only drive a little Honda civic, but 3 kids in car seats I needed more room. Was lucky to find on craigslist has been 6 yrs.

  • Most affordable car for its quality

the car met all of my needs, it has plenty of leg room in the front and back, and is a 6 seater, the trunk is big, it has passed every inspection every 3,000 miles, it has a gear stick behind the wheel, plenty of cup holders and ashtrays.

The truck has plenty of space and is reliable. This truck lasted me for quite some time. But it is time to get rid of it because I’m moving.

  • Head gasket failures every six months

If this thing had any engines other than that piece of trash Triton 4.6 or 5.4 it would be the best Truck ever. These motors blow head gaskets left and right. They don't even pretend to care when you let ford know. Stay away from the Gen 1 expedition

  • This is the most reliable car I've ever owned

This car is very excellent, in good condition for it's 18 years of age. Almost looks new, except the crack in windshield due to passing pigeon, not that bad. No check engine light, imaculant interior. Very comfortable feel, and is going to last a long time! Low miles 146,000

  • Best SUV!

I love my Expedition. I have room for kids, a dog and still have space for groceries. I prefer trucks and the Expedition offers the right mix of comfort to function. Gas mileage is the only issue, up it's an SUV. It can't compete with a compact for that. Just like a compact can't compete for room.
